5 out of 5 stars Great Digital DVD-VCR Combo   January 5, 2009

I bought this unit as a replacement for our analog Sony DVD-VCR combo, and all of its functions have worked flawlessly. We receive over-the-air digital TV signals, and the automatic set-up took only a few minutes. With our 30-year-old rooftop antenna, the tuner picks up not only the local stations but also those from a city 45 miles away. I've played and recorded both DVDs (using DVD+RW) and VHS tapes, and everything has worked without a hitch. The picture quality, using our Sony HD TV and an HDMI connection, is great. The menus and manual are easy to understand. Amazon delivered the unit promptly and in perfect condition.

The picture quality was very poor. It was also difficult to program. I returned it to Amazon and purchased a Toshiba DVD/VCR which is much better (and less expensive).

4 out of 5 stars Get this, not the Panasonic!   December 20, 2008

I wrote a positive review earlier for a Panasonic DVD/VHS with tuner, but then it started locking up on me (just like the other reviews said!), so I am retracting my review. Now, I took back the Panny and got the Sony; what a difference. Very easy to set up; it only took about 4 minutes to scan all the channels; picture looks great on TV and on DVDS, and dubbing VHS to DVD is easy. The Sony just seems more intuitive to operate than the Panny.

1 out of 5 stars Sony RDR-VXD655: Engineered by Monkeys!   December 20, 2008

We don't record off the air too often, but when we do, it's important that it works. So, how disappointing would it be to make a 2 hour timer recording of the SF Ballet doing the Nutcracker then try to play the disc the next day and have the machine say "This disc can neither be played nor recorded". Excuse me? Technical Support (in the Philippines of course) had no explanation and the "product specialist" tried to blame the Memorex DVD+R DL disc I used (even though the very next one on the spindle properly recorded when tested). What he didn't know was I'm a retired IT project manager.

"Your machine formatted the disc right?" I said.
"Yes."
"When a computer formats a floppy or a hard disc it marks any bad sectors and won't record on them or won't format the disc at all."
"But that's for floppy discs and hard discs not DVDs" he says.
"Yes, it is, if your computer has a CDR or DVDR drives it will do the same formatting checks. So, once your DVD recorder formats my disc I should expect the recording to work. Otherwise it's defective"

Of course, it didn't work. Which is just the kind of failure which would put Sony out of the computer business if it happened on their laptops, or DVD drives. But then, they don't write the operating system software which, otherwise, would be worse than Vista! So who did they assign to engineer this? A rookie?

Then, as mentioned in another review, you can't add ATSC digital channels after you've done a scan. This means if your in a location where you use a rooftop antenna which rotates, because there are digital channels in more than one direction, you may not be able to get them all. Another gaffe.

And, of course, there is no local authorized repair center for the DVD recorders or VHS machines so you must ship it to them at your own expense.

Maybe this is what happens when a corporation grows too big: it ignores it's customers desire for quality and reliability in favor of junk at a higher profit margin. Maybe that's why none of my other equipment is from Sony. I should have continued not buying from Sony.

Completely happy with this; VHS is VHS but recording on the DVD side (2hr mode) is very clear. It take a few seconds to read the disc but other than that it works fine. This is my second one.
