Excellent System January 3, 2009 I purchased this unit for my father as a replacement for his VCR. He is 77 years old and needed something simple to operate. This unit was an excellent choice. It was very easy to setup and easy for him to learn to use.
I have only two minor complaints.
My first complaint was that the unit would not let you use high speed dubbing to DVD if you use a different recording format than you originally used to record the program to the hard drive. We recorded a two-hour program in HQ mode. Since HQ mode only allows 60 minutes of recording to a DVD, we had to use a different recording mode (SP). Therefore, the unit required us to record to DVD in real-time (taking two hours of recording time) instead of high-speed dubbing (which would only have taken about 10-15 minutes). Now we know and generally record long programs in a mode that will allow high-speed dubbing to DVD.
The second complaint is that the buttons on teh remote control are very small and the labels are hard for my father to read.
I am very happy with the purchase and have considered getting one for myself.
Great product......works as described.....provides DVR service without fee December 28, 2008 We have had this unit for 3 weeks now and are very pleased. This unit is not as full featured as those with an on screen TV guide but it works well for a no fee DVR service. Just select shows to record similar to the procedures used to record on a VCR. Select time, channel and frequency and this machine will capture the show. You can edit and skip commercials. Great machine for the money and fee free service!
very pleased December 27, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I read a number of review on this site before purchasing this item. I was pleasantly surprised to find that this unit will record a program and play back a pre-recorded program at the same time. Based on reviews here, I got the impression that it would not do that. I was wrong, it does. Also, I have no problem recording a program and watching another using my digital tv. As I have said in a few other comments, I have it connected to an antenna using a splitter. One side of the splitter feeds the TV and the other feeds this recorder. I don't have the TV out antenna jack on the back of this unit connected to anything. I don't know what results I would get if I did... but the way I wired it, it works fine.
Another review said that they are having to zoom even when recording 16:9 content. I hope I can shed a bit of light on this. In the manual, it states very clearly that it records 16:9 content as 4:3, and outputs it as such. For reasons I'm about to explain, I am using both component outputs and HDMI into the same TV. The TV is a Sony HDTV. When using the component inputs, I have to manually stretch the screen when playing back 16:9 content. 4:3 content comes out fine. When using HDMI, 16:9 content is automatically stretched to fit the screen, but then so is 4:3. 4:3 content is distorted by being stretched, and I can't stop it. Therefore, when watching 16:9, I use HDMI, and when watching 4:3, I use the component inputs. A bit annoying, but easy to work around.
Another review said that the unit was not intuitive to operate. I disagree. I had mine up and running with almost no contact with the manual. I just read the manual to fill in the details.... which is when I found it can record and playback at the same time, and that the output is always 4:3, no matter what the content (see above).
I have not found a signal strength meter for the antenna input. It may have one, but if it does, either I'm missing it or it's well hidden. They are very handy when pointing an antenna. If they forgot it in this unit, it's quite an oversite.
In all, I am very pleased with this recorder. My only gripe (beside the signal strength meter) is that there should be more of these on the market. Also, an HD unit would be nice, but given the current price of blue ray players, a recorder of this type would probably cost $700-$1000 in HD. Although this device is SD, if you are happy with the look of a standard DVD, you will probably be happy with this as well.
What's an antonym for intuitive? December 27, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
In order to use this recorder you almost need to spend a lot of time learning and memorizing the functions and how to use them. The remote is one of the cheapest looking and hardest to use that I have had. I have even owned cheap universal remotes that were far superior. I tried burning a DVD with it thinking that maybe it would at least be good for that but the DVD that I created with it could not be played on anything else. This product not only greatly disappointed me but also is discouraging me from purchasing any Phillips product at this time.
Phillips DVDR3576H doing the job.... December 27, 2008 After doing considerable research on DVRs that didn't require a subscription, I decided to give this unit a try. It arrived in a timely fashion in good condition. Out of the box and set up was simple and straight forward. The large picture insert made it easy enough to follow the setup procedure. I tried recording off TV in the first hour. It worked like a charm, very quiet as others have mentioned and the timer setup was similar to any VCR (of the good ol days) to select the date, time, channel and recording speed. Everything worked as advertised. It is easy to delete unwanted programs also. I haven't tried the editing or repeated recording aspects of the device, but it looks pretty straight forward. If you have ever used a DVR from other cable companies, this works similarly. I haven't had the problems that other reviewers have mentioned, nor have I had a need to contact the service department. I will agree with other comments about the size of the remote buttons, it is easy to press the wrong button. If this was illuminated, it would be a plus as well. All things considered, this seems to be a good investment (especially that it doesn't carry a subscription with it) and it seems to be appropriately priced under $300.
