From the Manufacturer
The biggest challenge for compact audio systems is to take any music genre and reproduce a detailed, balanced audio output. If we judge the CS-315 CD receiver system on that basis alone, we have a winner. Anchored around Onkyo's Wide Range Amplifier Technology (WRAT), the CS-315 excels in revealing the nuance of CDs or MP3 tracks recorded to disc. Another outstanding option is to team it up with Onkyo's RI Dock for the iPod to bring audio fidelity to all digital music files stored on your PC. Looking as good as it sounds, the CS-315 is enhanced by its striking front aluminum panel and vibration-reducing build. Don't forget its versatile mobility—this system will easily slot into most spaces that you choose. Forming a competent audio chain with the distinctive D-N7BX 2-way, bass reflex speakers, you can expect the CS-315 to create all the right impressions wherever you place it.

Key technology Features:
WRAT (Wide Range Amp Technology): Imagine turning up the volume and filling your entertainment room with noise-free, impressively powerful, true-to-life sound. That's the benefit of Wide Range Amplifier Technology. Originally developed for our most expensive high-end amplifiers to handle the sonic demands of today's digital age, you'll now find WRAT even in our lowest-priced A/V receivers. The WRAT family of technologies includes a broader frequency range with lower noise entering the signal path - perfectly suited for new high resolution DVD-Audio and SACD formats.

MP3 Playback:
This audio format achieves about a 10:1 compression over conventional CD audio. What does this mean? You can store many more songs using the same amount of space. For example, a standard 650MB CD can hold more than 200 songs in MP3 format. Various bitrates allow for higher or lower quality, depending on the desired sound quality of the final recording.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent System   October 9, 2008
Clear and crisp sound. Powerful enough for any bedroom or a medium size living room. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great quality sound   February 20, 2008
I bought the Onkyo 315 due to the great quality of sound I got in my recently purchased Onkyo Home Theater and I couldn't be happier. I am becoming a fan. I have found out that Onkyo receivers and amplifiers offer a variety of solutions that compete with most expensive devices. Onkyo is an affordable great quality of sound brand.

4 out of 5 stars Good sound, speakers not all that compact   February 16, 2008

System delivers great sound, but the speakers are on the large size - good for sound, but not so good if you're short on space. The big surprise is how deep the speakers are (11.5 high by 6.5 wide by 9.5 deep). Another drawback is that the CD player does not do a fast forward or reverse scan without the remote (it will skip forward/back by track).

All that I really needed was a CD player (not a radio receiver), and if this is the case for you, consider the Bose Companion 2 Series II speakers for $99. These are self-amplified (which means they need a nearby wall plug for power) and they will plug right into a portable CD player or a laptop computer. This is what I should have done, as they are cheaper, smaller, and produce adequate sound for my kitchen.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as I hoped   August 4, 2007

This unit does not have the clean and clear sound that I hoped. The adjustment of bass and treble could not achieve a good EQ overall. The volume limit is also relatively low. I have owned the Yamaha MCR series and this does not compare to those systems in terms of sound quality, rounded sound, volume or ability to drive nice headphones. After six months I decided to buy another Yamaha.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent unit   June 18, 2007

I purchased this early this year from Amazon - I think the unit came from Vanns, which was fine.

I use it in my office, which is in a basement. I had returned a Philips unit because of horrible reception. This one does the job. Plus the CD plays MP3s so I just burned a disk with a few hundred songs and never have to do a thing. Very satisfied.
