Amazon Best of the Month, May 2008: Stephenie Meyer, creator of the phenomenal teen-vamp Twilight series, takes paranormal romance into alien territory in her first adult novel. Those wary of sci-fi or teen angst will be pleasantly surprised by this mature and imaginative thriller, propelled by equal parts action and emotion. A species of altruistic parasites has peacefully assumed control of the minds and bodies of most humans, but feisty Melanie Stryder won't surrender her mind to the alien soul called Wanderer. Overwhelmed by Melanie's memories of fellow resistor Jared, Wanderer yields to her body's longing and sets off into the desert to find him. Likely the first love triangle involving just two bodies, it's unabashedly romantic, and the characters (human and alien) genuinely endearing. Readers intrigued by this familiar-yet-alien world will gleefully note that the story's end leaves the door open for a sequel--or another series. --Mari Malcolm

Product Description
The author of the Twilight series of # 1 bestsellers delivers her brilliant first novel for adults: a gripping story of love and betrayal in a future with the fate of humanity at stake.

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed.

Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.

Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, absorbing read   July 9, 2008
I am a huge stephen king fan, so finding books that keep me 100% interested are rare. The Road by C. McCarthy is one of them. This book kept me totally entertained and wanting to read on. I would sit for hours and not get anything done (which is rare for me as well)! I have not read Stephanie's other books (yet) but I have to say I am looking forward to her future works. The book was futuristic but not unbelievable. In a nutshell, it makes you feel good to be a human.

5 out of 5 stars SHE DID IT AGAIN!   July 8, 2008
ANOTHER PAGE-TURNING NOVEL BY MEYER. I FOUND MYSELF LOVING THE "ALIENS" AS MUCH AS I DID THE VAMPIRES. WELL DONE, STEPHENIE.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling!   July 8, 2008
This book moved me! It was full of such strong emotions that we as readers constantly feel along with the characters. I loved the Twilight Series and now I am hoping this one will turn into a series as well. It was so beautiful and well written!!!!

Found this novel extremely boring. Listened to it on CD. Even the narrator was mediocre.

4 out of 5 stars THE HOST   July 7, 2008
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, however I felt it was too long. I believe in getting to know your characters but a good portion of this book could be removed and it would've been just as compelling and wonderful. I'll admit to having skipped over some of what I considered filler, which ended up being a good portion of the beginning. Once our main character arrived at her destination, sorry trying not to spoil, it was excellent. I was so engrossed that I nearly cried at the end. In short, its a wonderful book. Well worth the price and though I skipped more then usual it did nothing to dampen the mark this book left. It's on the keeper shelf for sure.
