Misleading August 18, 2010 Jay I found the reviews quite misleading. The book is very sweet (as someone said), but I think it is aimed at very young readers. From the simplistic way it is written and the repetition to ensure the reader doesn't miss the point; I'm fairly certain that the author intended it to be read by - or to - young children.
So if you're looking for a page-turner or an enthralling period novel, this isn't the one you should choose. But as a gift to a 10 year old girl, it's perfect.
Not a book for a heavy reader August 9, 2010 K. Iverson 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Another reader correctly wrote that the language is a bit stilted in this book - the writing seemed very simplistic and juvenile for me as someone who reads a lot. The story plods along not seeming to be heading anywhere. While others may have found this book heartwarming, I had a hard time appreciating the characters - perhaps this was because of the writing quality. I recognize that this book takes place in a simpler time. I think the "sweetness" factor is likely to just be appreciated by an older audience who are able to better relate to a different time period.
A wonderful story! August 4, 2010 D. Lockwood (Kerrville, TX USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I almost didn't get this book as I thought it was only for children. I'm so glad I decided to read it. Ociee was spunky and endearing, and I got a taste for what life was like, especially for a child, in that day and age. I'm looking forward to reading more about Ociee.

Great story for young children and adults as well. This story is something I don't mind reading to my grand children. It's heart warming, funny, and teaches us all about life. You can learn a lot of history from these pages as well. The author did a wonderful job telling us the story, through the eyes of a young girl. I can see why they made a movie out of it.
I am definitely going to get the second book in the series and start reading it immediately.

"A Flower Blooms on Charlotte Street", by Miliam McGraw Propst, is based on the true life of her grandmother in Asheville, North Carolina at the turn of the 20th century. This cute, loveable story stars Ociee Nash who was named such because her little brother couldn't pronounce her given name, Josephine. Ociee, brothers, Ben and Fred, and father George Nash live on a farm in Mississippi where her mother died of the measles just a year before.
Knowing it wasn't the best environment for raising a ten year old girl, George sends Ociee to be raised by his older sister, Mamie, who is a self-employed seamstress working out of her house at 66 Charlotte Street, Asheville, N.C. Gypsies, an overnight train ride, a neighborhood fire, and the city life of Asheville, population 15,000 is some of what Ociee experiences in this story. It has the Tom Sawyer feel to it, and is definitely a charming story of a simpler time.
