Product Description
From the author of Where the River Ends, comes this page-turning story of love and survival.

On a stormy winter night, two strangers wait for a flight at the Salt Lake City airport.  Ashley Knox is an attractive, successful writer, who is flying East for her much anticipated wedding.  Dr. Ben Payne has just wrapped up a medical conference and is also eager to get back East for a slate of surgeries he has scheduled for the following day.   When the last outgoing flight is cancelled due to a broken de-icer and a forthcoming storm, Ben finds a charter plane that can take him around the storm and drop him in Denver to catch a connection.   And when the pilot says the single engine prop plane can fit one more, if barely, Ben offers the seat to Ashley knowing that she needs to get back just as urgently.   And then the unthinkable happens.  The pilot has a heart attack mid-flight and the plane crashes into the High Uintas Wilderness-- one of the largest stretches of harsh and remote land in the United States.

Ben, who has broken ribs and Ashley, who suffers a terrible leg fracture, along with the pilot's dog, are faced with an incredibly harrowing battle to survive.   Fortunately, Ben is a medical professional and avid climber (and in a lucky break, has his gear from a climb earlier in the week).  With little hope for rescue, he must nurse Ashley back to health and figure out how they are going to get off the mountain, where the temperature hovers in the teens.   Meanwhile, Ashley soon realizes that the very private Ben has some serious emotional wounds to heal as well.  He explains to Ashley that he is separated from his beloved wife, but in a long standing tradition, he faithfully records messages for her on his voice recorder reflecting on their love affair.  As Ashley eavesdrops on Ben's tender words to his estranged wife she comes to fear that when it comes to her own love story, she's just settling.  And what's more: she begins to realize that the man she is really attracted to, the man she may love, is Ben.

As the days on the mountains become weeks, their survival become increasingly perilous.  How will they make it out of the wilderness and if they do, how will this experience change them forever?

Both a tender and page-turning read, The Mountain Between Us will reaffirm your belief in the power of love to sustain us.

4 out of 5 stars 3.5-4 rating   September 1, 2010

3.5-4 stars for a book by one of my favorite authors! The first 3/4 seemed as if it would never end. Interesting? Yes, but enough is enough. The last part was more what I expected. Martin's genius at writing a love story! What an amazing and surprising ending! Overall, a beautiful story!

5 out of 5 stars Great Story and will keep you on the edge of your seats   August 29, 2010

When reading books, sometimes I come across a book that really touches me and I will read it over and over. The Mountain Between Us is one of those.

Dr. Ben Payne is waiting for a flight out of Salt Lake City. He befriends a young lady, Ashley Knox who is also trying to get a flight home for her upcoming wedding. A snow storm hits causing all flights to be cancelled. Ben finds a charter plane that can take him around the storm. The pilot tells him that one more small person can fit in the plane. Ben invites Ashley to join them, knowing that she is urgent to get back home.

What happens next will blow your mind and suck you into the story. Ben and Ashley both board the small plane to meet the nice pilot. They take to the skies and are sharing stories about their lives and Ashley's upcoming wedding, when the pilot has a heart attack and causes the plane to crash in the very remote High Uintas Wilderness.

Both Ben and Ashley suffer injuries during the crash. Ashley has a horrible leg fracture and will have to rely on Ben's medical profession experience to save her. Ben who has some issues with his estranged wife is leaving her messages on a voice recorder give a play by play of what is going on in the present while also describing his memories and love for his wife into the voice recorder. Ashley is alway overhearing the loving things that Ben is recording for his wife and start to rethink her own relationship with her fiancé. While trying to make the long journey out of the wilderness and relying on each other, Ben and Ashley find a bond between them.

Charles Martin gives us a story about Faith, Love, and Friendship. You will fall in the with characters and became so involved in the story that will not be able to put the book down.

5 out of 5 stars very good story!   August 19, 2010

Most reviews give a breakdown of the storyline. Two people trapped start to talk to each other about their lives and start to make realizations about their lives becase of their perilous situation. Ashley and Ben are two people that we get to know very very well and for me that makes a fantastic book. Since they are stranded we have a lot of time to delve into each of their minds. I love characterization and done well. I say that in nearly every review but it's what makes me love reading. I want to know the people I'm reading about otherwise I don't care about what happens to them. A fantastic plot can't fix the lack of character development for me. This book has both. I'm normally not a big fan of Christian fiction but dang if Mr. Martin doesn't do it very well without beating a bible over one's head. I really enjoyed this one.

I won't give a breakdown of the book because many people already did. However if your wanting to get a feel for it....here it goes. This is the first book by Martin I have read. I must say the idea of reading a "Christian fiction" book did not make me want to run out and buy his books, so I have put this author off for quite awhile. I tend to make the assumption there will be too much preaching and it does not interest me. That said, I was pleasantly surprised this book was nothing like what I expected. I am not sure how much an author likes to be compared to other authors, but this book had a Nicholas Sparks feel to it. If you have read Sparks books, you're familiar with how he immediately makes you care for his characters. This is exactly how I felt while reading this book; I was drawn to the characters and their lives. I wanted to read more just to keep in touch with them. The other area that I'd compare to Sparks is the ending. I enjoy endings that are unexpected-or throw the reader in another direction and this book did just that! Sometimes a reader can detect the endings and other times they have no clue! I look forward to reading more by Martin! I am glad I finally gave one of his books a chance!
