Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
“This text captures the essence of what beginning teachers need to know about being successful in the K-8 social studies classroom.”
-Eric Groce, Mississippi State University

This book revolves around the idea that making personal connections with the material to be learned is what creates powerful learning experiences. Making Connections in Elementary and Middle School Social Studies is a comprehensive, reader-friendly text that demonstrates how personal connections can be incorporated into social studies education while meeting the National Council for the Social Studies’ thematic, pedagogical, and disciplinary standards. The book examines a variety of methods both novice and experienced teachers alike can use to make social studies more interesting and to help students make their own personal connections.

Key Features:
  • Enhances learning in each chapter with a wealth of classroom strategies, pedagogical techniques, activities, and lesson plan ideas
  • Prompts readers to link their own experiences with the chapter context with “Thinking Ahead” questions and thinking points
  • Provides students with explicit step-by-step instructions in the application of a strategy in the “How Do I?” section
  • Offers "Teachers in Action" boxes to describe words of classroom teachers in resopnse to issues or concerns relative to teaching and learning. The majority of these are authentic postings reprinted with permission from the ProTeacher Community. www.proteacher.net
  • Includes a dynamic Instructor’s Resources CD with sample syllabi, PowerPoint slides, ready-made lesson plans, test bank, project ideas, and Web and teaching resources, including full-text journal articles

Making Connections in Elementary and Middle School Social Studies is designed for undergraduate and graduate students studying Social Studies Methods, Curriculum and Instruction, Elementary Education, and Middle School Education. It is also an excellent reference for practicing teachers who want ideas for how to update their teaching methods or wish to update their knowledge of the field.

5 out of 5 stars Better Than I Anticipated   September 13, 2008
I was required to purchase this book for a social studies methods class. It is chock full of practical lesson ideas as well as explaining the underpinnings for presenting lessons in these ways. Very helpful to a preservice teacher or a teacher that is interested in new ideas for social studies lessons.

This book provides a lot of practical activities for making learning active and interesting. I was able to use these in my 5th grade classroom. I've been teaching for 10 years and this book gave me a whole new view on teaching social studies. This book will be useful for beginning teachers as well as for veteran teachers. It shows how social studies can move from a boring subject where you memorize state capitals, to a dynamic, student-centered subject. This book gives good background information as well as teacher ideas. Why aren't more academic books written like this?
