 not a good for the self-esteem- NOT recommended November 17, 2008
I know what I will say has already been said but I feel it needs to be repeated. I bought this book because I thought it would have a good message about being overweight and living life. Man, was I WRONG. This book was the worst piece of "literature" I've ever read. The character starts off fat and has no friends. She is pretty much depicted as a disgusting loser. Then, within, what? 6 months or so she loses 100 lbs. Yes, 100 lbs. Not to mention that this is a really unrealistic book, it also doesn't go into her struggle to lose the weight. She goes to the gym and eats salads, but we never get to hear about her hunger pangs, or feeling faint, tired, nothing. So once she loses the weight she is all of a sudden SUPERMODEL gorgeous and everyone wants her. She's getting whistles everywhere she goes. Guys stare at her and give her lame pickup lines. Does she not have any stretch marks? Any any any not toned skin? No, of course not. She looks like a model. The Brad/Jenny thing was absolutely ridiculous and Brad took up most of the book. Then, here comes the worst part: The perfect man that Jemima always loved, Ben, doesn't speak to her for months. He calls her in LA just to meet up. He gives her some dumb pickup line because he doesn't even recognize her. (WHAT?) and then talks about how great she looks, and of course: sleeps with her. Then after that he all of a sudden is in love with her. I'm sorry, did I just get that right? They had known each other for years before, and he only saw her as a friend. Now she is a size 2 so the first day you see her again you are in love? This book was VOMIT INDUCING. I have struggled with my weight all my life and this was not a good book for me to read. It just made the bold point of happiness comes with being thin. Love comes once you are thin. Then, maybe the ending was supposed to make us feel better by claiming that she is now a volumptuous size 10. No, really that does not make up for the whole book, sorry Jane Green. I will never read a book by her again. It was insulting to Americans, insulting to the overweight, really just... insulting.

Although this book is not the next prize winner of the year, I did find it a good read for a lazy Sunday. There were alot of refernces to weight and body image, but you know that when you read the back cover. I thought it was a good book to get lost in for the afternoon, and think it was worth the time.
The Best Jane Green I've Read October 7, 2008
I read Bookends and The Other Woman and thought they were just OK. I stuck with Jane Green because she has so many loyal readers and I kept hoping the next one would explain her fan base. With this book, Jemimia J, I finally understand what the fuss is about.
Is the ultimate ending predictable? Yes. After all, she telegraphed the "happily ever after" by giving the book the subtitle: "A Novel about Ugly Ducklings and Swans." But it was fun getting to that fairy tale end -- and isn't FUN the point of chick lit? Plus, the writing and character development are a bit more ambitious in this book. I especially liked Ben and Geraldine and found them believable.
So far, in my personal "chick lit derby," Marian Keyes is still in the lead. But now I see why Jane Green is considered such a strong contender.
Funny, typical chick-lit October 1, 2008
This was my first Jane Green book. I really enjoyed it. I like her writing style, and there's no doubt that she's hilarious.
Jemima adores the man she works with, but aside from friendship he has no idea she's alive. And after discovering the internet and online dating Jemima meets someone in LA and starts a relationship.
Jemima has 2 love interests that will keep you hooked to read more.
The book basically fits into the typical mold that existed for a while there where the lead female lost weight and then won the man. I hate this message. But in this book, it's pretty funny. It's definitely worth a read.

I loved it, in fact all my friends loved it so much they snagged my copy. I had to buy this book three times! Now, I lend to no one, get your own copy!
I read it twice! Can't wait for the movie, if there ever is one. I'm a sucker for Cinderella stories.
