Product Description For the first time, fans of the blockbuster Gears of War video games get an in-depth look at Delta Squad’s toughest fighters–soldier’s soldier Marcus Fenix and rock-solid Dominic Santiago–as well as a detailed account of the pivotal battle of the Pendulum Wars.
As kids, the three of them were inseparable; as soldiers, they were torn apart. Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago fought alongside Dom’s elder brother Carlos at Aspho Fields in the epic battle that changed the course of the Pendulum Wars. There’s a new war to fight now, a war for mankind’s very survival. But while the last human stronghold on Sera braces itself for another onslaught from the Locust Horde, ghosts come back to haunt Marcus and Dom. For Marcus–decorated war hero, convicted traitor–the return of an old comrade threatens to dredge up an agonizing secret he’s sworn to keep.
As the beleaguered Gears of the Coalition of Ordered Governments take a last stand to save mankind from extermination, the harrowing decisions made at Aspho Fields have to be re-lived and made again. Marcus and Dom can take anything the Locust Horde throws at them–but will their friendship survive the truth about Carlos Santiago?

Great story for any Gears of War fan! November 29, 2008 This is a wonderful addition to the Gears of War storyline and any fan will enjoy it. The story moves between two time lines, before and after the first game, and helps fill in a lot of the details omitted from the story in the first game. Unfortunately it is not a good pick for people unfamiliar with the game storyline as it does rely on familiarity with this for some points of reference. It is well written and full of detail which draws the reader into the world created on the pages, my only complaint may be how short the story was, 385 pages in a slightly large font, I finished it in one afternoon. Overall I still give it a 5 out of 5.
good book November 27, 2008 im not a huge fan of the gears of war games but this was a surprisinly good read.
This book rocks! November 14, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a terrific book independent of the game. The book is extremely well written. The combat scenes in this are some of the best I have ever read. Forget that this has anything to do with a video game. This is hard core, hard as nails military science fiction. You won't be disappointed.
An Excellent Read; Adds Great Depth/Humanity to Your Favorite Gears November 12, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I'm not a big reader of books that tie into video games, and this was just my second such book. I was wholly surprised at how well the narrative was written and how quickly I got drawn into the universe.
I had played Gears of War I and found it to be a very good game, but one that contained the sterotypical 'space marine' archetype found in many many video games these days and I wasn't particularly attached to any of them.
Traviss does a phenominal job of creating the characters that we as readers already know of but don't really know. She dives deeply into the personalities of Dom, Cole, Baird, Marcus, Col. Hoffman and paints them not solely as they appear in the first game- all gruff and tough and hardnosed- but as actual people who have suffered traumatic loss in a war for the survival of humanity. Several new characters are also introduced and they carry into Gears of War II (which I am currently working through).
Obviously, if you have the history of GOW I behind you, you'll enjoy the book far more and I dare say that if you read this book you'll enjoy GOW II beyond what you'd normally experience in a video game because you know so much more about the characters and their motivations.
In summary, Karen Traviss has written a great book (not just a great video game tie in book) that stands on its own because of the effective narrative, dialogue, character development and plot. If you're a fan of the Gears of War world, it's a must read.
Good . . .not great November 6, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
If you are a Gearhead (Gears of War Fan) you will love this book as it really fleshes out the main characters back stories. It will answer some long standing questions & create some new ones. This book reads well & is good escapist fun. I'm usually not one to buy a novel from a video game, but Gears is different here because the 1st game doesn't give any back story really. It just throws you in the middle of the fray. That being said I enjoyed the novel & look forward to the next one in the planned trilogy.
