Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Children with autism struggle to make friends and navigate social situations. However, one child can make a significant difference in the life of a child with autism by offering compassion, understanding and friendship.

Since We re Friends is about two boys. One has autism, the other does not. The story of their relationship provides practical examples of how to make such a friendship work. It will help children see that their peers with autism can make a fun, genuine contribution to friendship.

From the publisher:
The prevalence of autism has skyrocketed in recent years. One in every 150 children is now living with this pervasive developmental disorder. The handful of autism children s books on the market represents the most severe cases of autism. However, most children with autism are much less severe. These misunderstood children struggle in social situations and have difficulty making friends. Since We re Friends will appeal to family members, friends, teachers, therapists, doctors, neighbors, and anyone who seeks to know and understand more about children with autism.

5 out of 5 stars Picture book about Autism   October 18, 2008
Great pictures and story about a boy who is friends with another boy with Autism. Good for explaining Autism to young children.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to show others how they can be a good friend!   October 13, 2008
I first bought this for my son who has Autism. Then I decided to loan it out to all his teachers so that they could read it to his classmates. I think it is a great book for children to read who have friends on the Autism Spectrum. I haven't heard the results of my sons teacher reading the book, but I am sure it will be helpful. It is a great book.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best for young children   October 6, 2008
Since We're Friends presents the friendship between a normally developing young boy and his friend Matt who has autism.

The story line is fine except for the part in which the main character says that he and Matt walk around the block looking at the neighborhood dogs and "Then we feed them treats through the fence...". The picture shows the one boy holding a bag of Doggie Snacks while Matt is giving one to a dog through the chain link fence. I don't think this would acceptable to most parents or pet owners and could be unsafe for any young child.

The back cover indicates that the book is suitable for ages 3 to 8. Since We're Friends may be fine for a book used at home where parents can explain that in their neighborhood, they should not try to pet or feed the dogs in the neighbors' yards. I ordered several copies to give to our school library and felt I had to return them and order a book more suitable for young children.

There is a great need for children's books of this type. I hope the author revises this book to make the story more appropriate for preschool and primary grade students.

3 out of 5 stars O.K. for young friends   October 6, 2008
Our mom's group had a problem with this book....the boy with Aspergers Syndrome (AS) is on a basketball team. That would be the worst experience for a child with high functioning autism. But the rest of the book is nice to express how a friend needs to make allowances to help and play with an AS child.

5 out of 5 stars Great!   October 1, 2008
This is a great book for kids! my son is 5 and he loved the story, and each page offers enough information that parents can expand and ask questions.
