Product Description The Linksys Instant Broadband EtherFast Cable/DSL Router is the perfect option to connect a small group of PCs to a high-speed Broadband Internet connection or to an Ethernet back-bone. Configurable as a DHCP server, the EtherFast Cable/DSL Router acts as the only externally recognized Internet device on your local area network (LAN). The router can also be configured to block internal users' access to the Internet. Unlike a typical router which can only share 100Mbps over all its connections, the Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router is equipped with a blazing 4-port EtherFast Switch, dedicating a breakneck 100Mbps to each and every connected PC.If four PCs are simultaneously accessing a standard shared-band-width router, they will only run at one-quarter the speed of any number of PCs accessing the Instant Broadband Cable/DSL Router. Not only will all of your PCs now be able to enjoy your lightning-quick Broadband Internet connection, they will also be able to share internal network data at ten times the Broadband Internet speed. Add it all together and your small network will move along faster than you ever thought possible.
Amazon.com Product Description The Linksys EtherFast cable/DSL router connects multiple PCs to a high-speed broadband Internet connection or to an Ethernet backbone. Configurable as a DHCP server, the EtherFast router acts as the only externally recognized Internet device on your local area network (LAN). The router can also be configured to block internal users' access to the Internet. A typical router relies on a hub or a switch to share its Internet connection, but the Linksys EtherFast router channels this connection through the full-duplex speed of its built-in EtherFast 10/100 four-port switch. This combination of router and switch technology eliminates the need to buy an additional hub or switch and serves your network as a completely dedicated, full-duplex backbone. Now your entire network can enjoy broadband Internet connections supported by its switched backbone. This unit requires an external cable or DSL modem with an Ethernet RJ-45 interface. This product comes with a one-year warranty. Note: All Linksys routers now include a special edition of Norton Internet Security! Great product, piss poor customer service! September 28, 2008 This is my 2nd of these routers in the past 5 years. My first one was working fine until I decided to go through the firmware upgrade process. Following the directions laid out by Linksys, the firmware update ended up making my router unusable. I called tech support and after waiting forever, the tech basically told me it was unfixable and I'd have to go buy another one. He never really asked me too many questions and just seemed interested in getting me off the phone and in the store to buy another one. I ended up having that first one for 2 years.
So I go purchase another one and have been using it for going on 3 years roughly. It works great, easy to setup and gives me lots of home network expandability.
I'm not a computer guru so I can't comment on it's technical aspects but I've never had any problems that were interent, home network or virus related with this product.
Excellent Buy! September 6, 2008 If you need more to add a computer to your house and don't want to pay for another cable connection this is the way to go. Don't buy a hub as it will not assign a unique IP address (at least that is what I was told). This thing worked like a charm!
Newer revision works great! September 3, 2008 I purchased this same router a few years ago, but this one is made differently than the old one. I'm guessing this one is a revised design because it works better than the old model. The only complaint I had about that one was each time I had a power surge (my PC line is connected to an A/C in the summer) the router would reboot even though I had the router and PC connected to a UPS and line conditioner. That's been fixed in this model. It still works flawlessly in all other areas. Easy to setup. Highly recommended.
Works great! August 31, 2008 This is my first experience with a router of any sort. It worked great right out of the box. Easy to set up and understand.
Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router is a good product. August 29, 2008 I was looking for a wired solution in order to share my DSL Modem between by laptop and desktop. This product was definitely high on my list as far as price and and all previous ratings were good on this product as well. My experience with this router has been definitely positive but the only thing preventing me from rating it higher would be the installation instruction. After several frustating attempts with installation wizard and failing I had to go to the Linksys site for help. To their credit I was able to find information that indicated that I had to change the default IP for the router but I did have to dig for it. Once this was done the installation went forward without any more glitches. Therefore the product is good but the installation CD and associated instructions...not so good.
