Life Altering! September 9, 2010 D. L. Miller (Michigan) I love this little machine. It's so little and cute and unobtrusive and SO portable!
If mine broke tomorrow I'd order another one right away. I just bought one as a gift for my friend. It's like, the best thing that has happened to my TV since TIVO! (though the new tivos make this kinda obsolete--this is infinitely more affordable~)
anyhow-super easy to install, controls so easy even my dad can operate it (and he can't even get ice out of the ice-maker on the refrigerator! I mean, come on!
So buy it and enjoy it. It facilitates one of my all time favorite things: Instant gratification!
PS. The price has REALLY gone down a lot from when I bought mine. Most likely because there are so many netflix ready devices out there now. But if you don't have a game system or tivo--it's perfect and you DO need it.
This thing is great!!! September 7, 2010 davidlevang 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If anyone has netflix, there is absolutely no reason you shouldn't have this. My wife and I got rid of cable and we hooked up our computer to our tv for almost a year. Wires, cord and everyone was just so messy. The netflix box was hooked up in less than 30 seconds and it's very small! Picture quality isn't any better than that of my computer, but the convenience of the box is the best part. I now have a remote and no wire mess!
If you're thinking about this box, stop thinking and get it. Don't even consider the bad reviews.
Great little box, immense sources, superb value for money September 7, 2010 abhi (NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this Roku in a deal where Amazon offered me $ 10 off, but the price fell by another $10 soon after. :-( Doesn't matter, happens with electronics all the time. I did not even know what Roku is when I saw the deal, looked up its homesite, read online reviews and ordered it. It was more than easy to install and the on-screen usage was fairly straight forward. I immediately renewed my Netflix subscription after getting Roku.
I have an old tube TV, but the Netflix quality appears fine, even non-HD ones. Having Pandora, and other internet based radio channels is a great bonus. The unending list of other free and premium TV and video channels really makes it an attraction. I never used to watch the TV, after Roku, I'm always glued to it.
I never need to switch it off, if I'm not using it, it goes to stand-by - really nice.
It did not have Youtube out of the box, but I googled a bit, and found a kinda hack solution, having YouTube on my TV, just made it awesome. The remote is simple and easy to use, really even Grandma could use it. :)
Coming to the improvement areas, these are some things I would suggest
- Volume controls on the remote. Many times I use Roku to play just the radio using my remoteless speakers, and the lack of volume control is missed.
- the on-screen keyboard is simple, but somehow not very easy. I wish the remote was touch-screen. :D
- Browsing Netflix, or search by genre is something REALLY missing in the Netflix interface.
- Other than that, more or less I love my ROKU.
Cheap, Commercial-Free TV September 6, 2010 david tolleson I dropped cable TV earlier this year. For all the channels, I found very little I wanted to watch and, when I did, it was overloaded with commercials. However, I missed having at least something coming into my TV :)
So... I got a Roku with the money I saved and have been very happy with it. I stream video from both Netflix and Amazon. I don't have to deal with commercials. I can use the savings from cable TV to buy an episode or season from Amazon. I go for SD (standard definition) because it's cheaper than HD.
My one recommendation is that you make sure your Roku has the latest software update. Mine didn't. When I got the update, I found that the Netflix user interface is much, much better than it had been. I just wish Amazon had a better user interface for Roku.

Good for what it is. September 6, 2010 Marshall D. Smith (sometimes Mobile, AL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought a Roku for my sister as an experiment. Would it be enough to replace cable? Unfortunately there is a lot of content that is not available on it such as hulu or live sports. But it does work as advertised quite well. This is really a netflix box with bonus content (although you can watch movies via Amazon if you don't have netflix).
Stuff I liked:
*Easy setup
*Blip.tv independent web content channel is popular with my sister
*TWiT network--Leo's recommendation went a long way towards convincing me to buy.
*Secret YouTube channel.
*Live NASA channel... turn it on and watch the earth go by!
Stuff I disliked:
*Menus are sloooooow. This is very unfortunate because actually getting a video to play requires a lot of clicks on the remote but you have to wait a few seconds between each one for the menu to load. This really hurts the user experience.
*Buffering... This was mostly due to the internet connection and not the fault of Roku. But be warned, if you have a slow connection (this was on 1.5Mbps DSL) you're in for a wait. The good news is that once it buffered at the beginning I didn't notice many problems after that unless somebody started web browsing on the same connection.
*A lot of big name networks have "channels" on Roku but they only have second string content. If NBC, FOX and the others would put their big names on their channel this would be a lot more useful.
Bottom line: This is a good solution for getting Netflix streaming onto your tv. The other content is a nice bonus but isn't enough by itself.
