This review is of the Region 2 PAL DVD of "Cape Wrath" (which was renamed "Meadowlands" for Showtime earlier this year). Personally, I think "Cape Wrath" is a far more interesting title, but I guess Showtime didn't want to confuse viewers since Meadowlands is the name of the strange little community that is the setting for this 7 episode tale. The basic premise of the story is that everyone in Meadowlands is in a witness protection program--which means everyone's got a secret past and a new name. It's a very weird series--the residents all have their own unique dance to the song "And the Beat Goes On". But you know, I like that kind of kitschy stuff, so "Meadowlands/Cape Wrath" is right up my alley. My favorite character is the community's doctor, who always says very inappropriate remarks to one of his patients and eventually turns out to be a bit of a kook. A very fascinating kook. The show reminds me of the dearly departed "Twin Peaks"--but much darker and violent. Did I mention that it's funny--if you enjoy your humor pitch black? The cast is wonderful all around: David Morrissey, Lucy Cohu and Melanie Hill are standouts. The DVD has commentary from the director and producer on Episode 1, plus a "Making of Cape Wrath" featurette. I'm really hoping that a second series will be commissioned since this first one does end on a major cliffhanger. If you want to go on a wild ride to a place you've never before, be sure you don't miss "Meadowlands/Cape Wrath" (and hopefully Showtime will release it on DVD here in the States).
