2 out of 5 stars Starpoint are much better than this   September 2, 2008
I have to disagree with several reviewers on the excellence of this compilation. I probably need to state from the outset that I am an all out fan of Starpoint and I do recognize that with some of these "oldies", it is not so much the artistic merit as the nostalgia at play.

I have leaned towards criticism rather than praise in this review because Starpoint are so much better than this compilation would suggest. Indeed, if I were to list my top 5 groups of the 80's, Starpoint would be guaranteed to make the short list! The passing of lead singer Renee Diggs in March 2005, a year after the passing of Starpoint lead artist Ernesto Phillips in March 2004, was a heartfelt loss.

I believe there are 3 shades to Starpoint. There is the incarnation responsible for the high energy tracks like "Restless", "Object of my Desire", "See the light", "So Delicious", "I'm so crazy 'bout you" and similar. Then there is the mid-tempo 'serious soul & funk' Starpoint that gave us the timeless classics like "It's all yours", "Miracle Love", "Bring Your Sweet Loving back", "Behind Your Back" and similar. Starpoint also did slow tempo and tracks like "Angel", "I got the love", "This is so right", "Something in your eyes", "All night long", "The more we love", "Try me" and similar are typical of this genre.
How one rates this compilation I guess could be down to which genre one prefers.

To be fair, this compilation does not claim to be a "best of". It is "Object of My desire and Other hits", so in this regard, the title is not entirely misleading. The compilation tries to strike a balance in selecting a good mix of various tempos but somewhat fails to deliver on choice in that it has excluded some of the huge hits that we associate with Starpoint.

The pros:
For a Starpoint CD, this one is dirt cheap and for that alone must score highly on value for money. It does feature "Object of my desire" and "restless" which were very popular tracks and would be worthy entries in a "best of" compilation.

The cons:
The number of missing hits is too high! "Behind Your back", "It's all yours", "Bring Your Sweet Loving back", "Miracle Love", "Satisfy me lover", "See the light" do not feature, and arguably, these were some of the best known Starpoint hits.

Verdict
There was a time when Startpoint CDs where next to impossible to find, and when you did find one, it cost an arm and a leg. The situation has changed now and one can find the originals on CD. That said, one needs to be careful to take note of individual album reviews and heed warnings to avoid buying CDs converted from analog sources rather than digitally remastered. The pricing on this CD makes it truly excellent value for money but it has to be said the CD has way too many Starpoint hits missing which renders this compilation somewhat hollow. If this is the only Starpoint CD in your collection, then I regret to say your search is far from over.

I have taken the liberty to include my personal and purely subjective ratings for individual Starpoint tracks across a few albums. Of course we cannot all agree! Tracks highlighted (**) are included in this compilation

5 out of 5 stars Great collection!   July 10, 2008
I think Starpoint's "Sensational" CD is the one I'd take with me to a desert island. Fortunately, this collection has three great tracks from it, plus their big hit "Object of My Desire" and six other wonderful tracks. I wish they'd added "Touch of Your Love," but what was included is a delight.

5 out of 5 stars Starpoint - Object of My Desire and Other Hits   June 16, 2008

I'm so happy to have this CD. As an 80's kid, I loved many R&B musical bands and Starpoint was one of the hot R&B musical bands of this decade. It saddens me that in today's musical environment there aren't many R&B musical bands together and actively recording (e.g. Mint Condition, Kool & The Gang, and Earth, Wind & Fire).

After recently recylcing my Starpoint cassettes (covering their first 4 albums), I was elated to find this compilation CD because I cannot find their 4 albums (as CDs) anywhere in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Thank you amazon.com for making my continued listening to Starpoint's music possible.

4 out of 5 stars A CD that I have been looking for a long time   June 3, 2008

Like many, I am a fan of Starpoint since their 1985 album "Restless," but I was always frustrated that I could not find any of their CD's since their music was out of print. This dollar-cheap compilation is excellent as it comprises most of their easily recognizable songs (He Wants My Body, Restless, Object of My Desire, The More We Love and Till the End of Time). The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that the CD is too short (only 10 songs) and therefore they omitted some memorable songs (I would have loved to see "Wanting You" included).

Anyway, listening to lead singer, Renee Diggs, with her dynamic and full-bodied vocals, is always a great experience. The keyboards and guitar riffs deserve close attention also. It's a pity that Renee's and Ernesto Phillips' early deaths prevent any further music from this group that had real talent and potential. Check out some of their videos on YouTube.

4 out of 5 stars Starpoint Object of my desire Always   January 7, 2008
it was pretty cool a lot of interesting choices yet missing all night long a great song featuring Renee Diggs soaring vocals
