Amazon.com The first thing you notice about Terri Clark is what a special voice this young woman has. When she asks the title question, "Is Fort Worth Worth It," for example, she grabs hold of the dramatic ballad melody and fills it with an alto voice so big it reverberates inside a held note. On this song, Clark plays the role of a woman saying goodbye to a man leaving her for someone else, and she manages to balance the heartbreak of an abandoned lover with the dignity of a survivor in a carefully nuanced performance. Clark never stoops to tear-jerking melodrama; she sings with the natural reluctance and controlled intensity of a jilted lover who refuses to give her ex the satisfaction of a scene. In other words, Clark is more than just a good voice; she's a singer. This is not an album with two singles and a bunch of filler; every title boasts a tune so insistent you can't help humming along and a story so clear you can't wait to hear what happens next. --Geoffrey Himes

Brilliant debut album of twangy country music July 8, 2005 Many excellent female singers have emerged from Canada including Diana Krall, Joni Mitchell, Shania Twain, Anne Murray - and Terri Clark. Terri will never be as famous as the others I've mentioned but her brand of country music is very enjoyable. Terri's music is essentially traditional but updated to appeal to a contemporary fan base. In this, she follows the example of singers such as George Strait and Alan Jackson, though Terri's style is all her own. The musicians on this album play drums, electric bass, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, steel guitar, Lap steel guitar, piano, fiddle, mandolin, tic tac bass and cowbell. All the songs are originals and most of them feature Terri as writer or co-writer. Tom Shapiro and Chris Waters also made significant songwriting contributions.
The album opens with a brilliant, upbeat song (Better things to do) in which Teri makes clear that she doesn't have time for a former lover. Terri sounds defiant but her list of better things to do is unconvincing, so it's up to the listener to decide if she really means it. The next song (If I were you) finds Terri advising another woman to stay true to her husband, explaining that the single life is not all that it's cracked up to be. Next comes a song (Catch 22) that all too many people will relate to - about not being able to win whatever you do.
Terri worries about her man being faithful (Is Fort Worth it), tells us about how life changes in adolescence (When boy meets girl), fantasises about a cowboy (Tying a heart to a tumbleweed), remembers poorer times when passion was strong (When we had it bad), tells a cautionary tale about a philanderer (Suddenly single) and tells a former lover that he's not welcome back (Flowers after the fact). Terri appears to contradict herself (The inside story) by missing a former lover but returns to the unfaithful man theme (Was there a girl on your boys' night out) before closing the album with a message to a former lover (Something you should've said).
So there are plenty of great songs here in an album that should satisfy all but the most die-hard traditional country fans.

Treading In Clark's Brand Of Country July 28, 2002 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Terri Clark's eponymous debut announced her as one of the more promising female artists on the country scene in the mid-nineties, thanks in large part to her distinctive voice and knack for extremely catchy, if sometimes lightweight, material. That doesn't mean Clark didn't have her lyrical moments here--her opening 'Better Things To Do' showed, at the least, her possession of a slightly clever, humorous streak, and 'If I Were You' showed she was more than capable of handling a first-rate ballad. The one minor downside here is that the majority of the uptempo material has a too-familiar sameness to it that doesn't always allow for immediate distinction. Otherwise, this set remained one of the better debuts of the mid-decade.

Wow! This is country music at its best! Terri Clark is one of my favorite country singers. I love 'Better Things To Do, When Boy Meets Girl, and Flowers After The Fact.' I like the accent in her voice, too. She is so fun and energetic! I'd recommend this album!
