Buffett sold his promise as a real-world singer-songwriter God knows how many boats ago, but 1977's Changes remains one of his last stands before plunging into a sea of parrotheads, "Fins," and personal empire building. "Margaritaville" was the deceptively lighthearted hit, but Steve Goodman's "Banana Republics" and the title tune also raised an eyebrow at the worlds Buffett encountered in his 100-proof-fueled travels. I wore the first one out. This is a replacement. Hey, I'm a parrothead, what can I say. Jimmy can do no wrong.

This is standard stuff, not as good as "Meet Me in Margaritaville" but still a wonderful link to the good life.
The Big One March 28, 2008
I agree with the many other reviews that stated that this is not quite as great a set as A1A or Living and Dying, but it is the big one for JB. The pre-Changes stuff seemed more insightful and introspective. It seemed that JB wrote about real people and not just a drunken party. I also strongly agree with the review that stated that this was the point where the true original fans were given a back seat to the "parrotheads". I can remember well going down on one of many trips to Key West with my buddies during the 70s and we went out on a charter boat. My one drunken buddy said to the mate on the boat "I guess you guys ran JB out of the Keys", and the mate replied "NO, you did!". It seems that it is always the same story...big money and popularity has a way of ruining the appealing part of many things. Tourists move to a sunny remote island, and then they complain about how there are too many people moving in. Changes was a great album when it came out, but I for one feel the whole parrothead thing just beat the horse to death, just like the "deadheads" (which never made any sense to me). When you have to talk about what a party things are, then the party is over. When I hear JB now, it seems like the wind is really out of his sails and eventually he will have enough money and will call it quits for good. This is the last great album he produced, and anything post Changes is just rehash for the parrotheads.

Before 1977, not too many people in the world, other than those of us living in Florida and the southeast USA, had ever heard of Jimmy Buffett. Then Changes In Latitudes Changes In Attitudes was released, and Margaritaville changed all of that. Now, of course, not too many people don't know about Jimmy Buffett! Changes is an excellent album, intelligent and amusing, mostly reflective thoughts and innocent fun, from a musician/sailor/pilot/novelist who made his home in Key West, Florida, made his living on the road, and spent a lot of time in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. Margaritaville finds Jimmy on his front porch swing, strumming his six-string, "watching the sun bake all of those tourist covered in oil". Tampico Trauma is a rocking tune with plenty of good guitar, harmonica, and a story of misadventures in Mexico. The title song is a thoughtful reflection on traveling, and how it can affect a person's mood (with a little fun thrown in, too). Banana Republics starts out solo acoustic then builds, and is one of Jimmy's best songs. It is still a highlight of his live performances. The bluesy Lovely Cruise is an optimistic farewell song, and Biloxi (Mississippi) is song about a place near Buffett's boyhood home on the Alabama Gulf Coast. It paints images of the people who make their living on the water, and their outdoor life in this coastal town. Changes In Latitudes Changes In Attitudes is Jimmy Buffett's most important studio album, one of his best, a Parrothead essential, and a good place to start if you want more than a Greatest Hits compilation...And don't forget the margaritas!

"Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, nothing remains quite the same...if we weren't all crazy, we'd go INSANE." This is our motto, and the music of Jimmy Buffett (real Parrotheads just call him "Bubba") is the ultimate background music of our lives. Every long trip we take includes this CD...and we know every song by heart. (Then again, we own EVERYTHING Bubba has done...music, books and DVD's!) Every Parrothead has this one, and if YOU want to be a true Parrothead you have to have this one! Of course, everyone, parrothead or not, knows the classic "Margaritaville", but we like "Tampico Trauma"(GOOD GOD!), "Miss You So Badly" and "Landfall" just as much. Get it, memorize it, BE A PARROTHEAD! BE HAPPY!
