5 out of 5 stars awesome, rockin' hits from 1958 !!!   February 10, 2008

Billboard Top Rock & Roll Hits: 1958 has some really awesome rock hits from 1958. We get ten great tracks for a budget price and the sound is excellent. This will bring back memories and prove to younger people everywhere that `50s rock is really awesome!

Danny And The Juniors start things off right with their awesome, rockin' hit called "At The Hop." This tune rocks pretty hard for 1958 and the musical interlude swings wildly--so much so you shouldn't be surprised if you want to jump up and start dancing to it the moment you hear it! "At The Hop" also features great harmonizing and Danny never misses a note. Great! "Tequila" by The Champs is another huge hit that always makes me smile whenever I hear it, the cries of "tequila" are just right and the jamming horn solo impresses me every time. "Tequila" is an excellent piece of music with just a few vocals to spice it up; and I predict that you will enjoy this very much.

The Teddy Bears weigh in with their adorable "To Know Him Is To Love Him." This sweet song with the memorable title scores big in my book. They sing and play this to perfection and it's also perfect for that slow dance you want with your sweetheart!

The Silhouettes have a hit with their "Get A Job;" this tune is good for both listening and dancing; and listen also for the incomparable Elvis doing his "Hard Headed Woman." Elvis sings this out great and the musical arrangement lacks nothing--it's THAT good. Elvis could really sing these tunes well and the backup vocalists never miss a note either.

The Elegants have a sweet tune with their "Little Star;" this tune makes good use of the percussion and they sing this with style. There's also The Coasters with their "Yakety Yak" number that almost sounds like a novelty piece today; and the CD ends strong with Jerry Lee Lewis belting out "Great Balls Of Fire." "Great Balls Of Fire" has an excellent arrangement for the piano and the guitars work well, too. Awesome!

Overall, this is great music from 1958. I highly recommend this CD for people who want to remember these great hits and the good times that went with them. Of course, younger people will discover that the `50s really rocked!

5 out of 5 stars Authentic Originals   February 17, 2005

In response to one prolific reviewer, I know people from New York, the greater South and California who remember Conway Twitty's "It's Only Make Believe" as an iconic song of the early rock years (the only one they remember though he made several other good ones). The Teddy Bears song is a bit of rock history as the group included Quick Draw Phil Spector who later created the "wall of sound" for the Crystals, Ronettes, etc. Unless you can find these songs included in a larger selecion, I say go for this package of charted hits.

The year's biggest chartbusters are all here with great sound quality. 1958 was a banner year for rock and roll, and this collection does a good job of representing what all the fuss was about.
