Amazon.com While the pop classics by the grit-and-honey singer reached a broader audience, Sam Cooke's formative music with the Soul Stirrers, recorded for the Specialty label, ranks with both his best and gospel's best. Only 19 when he was recruited in 1950 to replace the group's venerable R.H. Harris, Cooke developed the signature style he would carry into the popular arena while he was still singing church music. Disc 1 shows the raw passion of a vocalist who has yet to apply the polish for which he would become known. By disc 2, Cooke is no longer tentative in replacing a legend but asserting an irrepressible musical identity. Disc 3 demonstrates his growth as both a vocal master and an ambitious songwriter--most famously on "Touch the Hem of His Garment"--while documenting his transition as a solo artist into the secular arena. Among the revelations of the set's 83 tracks, the stripped-down arrangements on the alternate takes of "Come and Go to That Land" anticipate the rise of "sacred steel," while the vocal call-and-response over the organ bedrock of "All Right Now" is as rapturous as gospel gets. After the various takes of "Were You There?" show how Cooke could take the most familiar material and make it his own, the final three tracks capture his electrifying impact in live performance. --Don McLeese

AWESOME COLLECTION OF A LEGENDARY GROUP AND A LEGENDARY SINGER August 4, 2008 I love it!!! It a great collections of songs by a legendary groupin their own rights. If you like great gospel quartet singers, Sam Cooke and the soul stirrers are one of the best in their time. It refreshing to hear this great gospel quartet. A blend of harmonizing voices. Their collabration in voice is wonderful. When they sing acapella, the blend of voices is perfect harmony. The collection is great. You even hear the live recordings of Sam Cooke and Soul stirrers. There is a small book enclosed that records the history of their humble begininings. You should get you a set today!!!!!!
Sam Cooke and Soul Stirrers June 19, 2008 music brings back many memories. Sam Cooke was so talented. Sound on these DVD's not that great
Incredibly good, historically significant January 28, 2008 Really, really great. It's all I've had in my CD changer for 2 weeks. Especially like the way the songs are in chronological order, so you can hear the sound evolve from pure gospel to soul. Not a cheap CD set, but well worth it. The Soul Stirrers were recording in the 1930's, and when paired with Sam Cooke in the early 50's they really make a great combination. Digital sound, well re-mastered. No tape hiss, cracks, or pops. Great sound, great music, awesome talent.
Sam is alright with me January 18, 2008 I knew this collection was special when it was the only thing that my husband would play. I had to buy it for him! He likes old school but he isn't a gospel-listening regular. Sam's main stream music doesn't compare, something about singing for the Lord. Sam and the Soul Stirrers capture the somewhat lost art of keeping it soulful, and all about praising our Father above. The albums contain alot of the old school favorites you still sing in church today. It's a beautiful compilation that makes you feel blessed listening to it. I am so glad my husband put me on it.
Gospel at its Purest and Best! November 29, 2007 I initially became interested in this set after hearing just seconds of a song in a movie. It is one of the best music purchases I've made in ten years! All genres of music in recent years is so over proccessed to the point where if you heard the person live you wouldn't recognize the voice, but Sam and the Soul Stirrers are so talented and open with their delivery of every song that you can't help but appreciate the honesty. Even the jacket information adds to the set by adding historical and social connections to times the songs were done. This is definitely worth much more than I paid for it.
