Atlanta's Faust and his turntablist compadres certainly know their hip-hop history. Or at least, public hip-hop history, as they scratch through every jeep-beat classic from the last ten years or so. Why show off the underground when you are the underground? And his technical agility can't be faulted, as he cuts beats together with an intelligent, rhythmic aplomb, although things are so necessarily micro-managed that it sometimes ends up sounding a bit like progressive rock. But this is one of the paradoxes of the ever strengthening turntablist genre. This hour-long CD is a single indexed track, which creates unnecessary ill-will. But isn't "ill" a compliment? --D. Easily one of the most accomplished Turntable albums ever... January 14, 2005
If you thought that you'd heard, all there was to hear in regards to 'Turntablism' albums, and that the genre was completely sown-up with Artists such as: DJ Q-Bert, DJ Shadow/Cut Chemist, Beat Junkies, Mixmaster Mike & the X-Ecutioners. Then It's time to Think Again....
DJ Faust, dropped this relatively unheard of gem around 1998, and seemingly (apart for those that happened to cross it's path), went largely unnoticed....whether that was due to poor distribution or a limited amount of copies pressed, isn't clear. Suffice to say, that the only way for me to get this was to order it from Amazon.
Remarkably, (according to the notes with the Cd), that this was mixed with nothing other than: ('A Couple of Turntables and a Beat-up old Mixer'), but...the standard of Mix is literally on a par with the very best Turntable albums out there.
DJ Faust, doesn't make the mistake of using the CD to emphasis his beat-juggling, and furious scratching & Mixing skills, at the cost of listening accessibility. Sure, he does display small elements of these techniques, but it's used to enhance the mix as opposed to overpower it. Far too many Turntable albums make the mistake of trying to do too much in too short of space, and ultimately never truly allows to music to shine through. Faust's mix on the other hard, is as intelligent and restrained a Mix as one could possibly hope for, and his decision to not pitch his tent purely in the realms of 'Hip-Hop' give this mix some incredible diversity.
Although Hip-Hop does make up the vast majority of the mix, it's inclusion of sublime Beat Programming, Funk, Northern Soul, Rock & Rhythm & Blues is staggeringly accomplished. and the ability to seamless incorporate, break beats, scratches, vocal samples, electronica and psychedelia, into a dense and equally futuristic & eclectic mix is (largely) comparable to anything released in the last 5 years.
There's a sense of innovation & Intricacy here, that is lacking in the majority of Turntable albums. Although not wanting to take anything away from the other artists mentioned earlier in the review, but It's clear that when you listen to this remarkable record, that he (DJ Faust) needed to bring something new to the table (however small), in an effort to distinguish himself, and this he does in no uncertain terms.
Skilled & technical enough to appeal to the hardcore audience....yet (just about) accessible enough to pull in some causal listeners. Faust allows the music itself to be the most expressive element in his mix, rather than his technical ability, and has the pleasure of being one of the finest Turntable albums this listener, has had the pleasure of hearing. If you want a Turntable album without too much showboating & gimmicks, or your a Turntablist listener, looking for a new album, this will take some beating....strongly recommended.
P.s.The back of the Cd lists 27 tracks, but it's actually sequenced as one long mix.

If you like the Return of the DJ series from Bomb Hip-Hop records, you will like this, it is great. The scratching sounds really good with everything.
