no other words to desribe this cd... im just getting into nancy wilson older classics, i always loved her, as to the columbia stuff, hello like before,(she shows her chops still! at an older age on this one)) the two of us, deeper, and some more i love, but for some reason, i began collecting her capitol recordings thats on cd, and im glad. i love jazz and she definitely gives me what i been looking for this past couple of months. as i got this cd, wow! this is a cd you just sit back, have some wine, or what have you... i cant say on here... but u get my driff... :) , close your eyes and just listen to her sing... listen to the real instruments the musicans play... this is my favorite cd so far, as i continue to collect her recordings on cd... (the ones that are on cd), im almost finished... well back to the cd my favorite songs(the ones i play the most) are supper time,(this is the one), glad to be unhappy,(she sang this song for me) oh look at me now,(love it) just listen to the snipets on her and you will definitely get this cd... i never knew all this stuff from her and i love it so far...
One of Nancy's BEST ! April 1, 2001 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
This is a rather remarkable album Nancy put out back in the '60s when she was churning them out one after another. I can't say even in her heyday ('60s) that all her records were great, but this is an absolute MUST if you're a fan of jazz and Nancy's music. Her voice here attains a depth of feeling that was missing from a lot of her prior albums on Capitol. I don't know whether it was the spare arrangement here that brought out her best or she simply sounds better with less orchestration, but she simply NAILS every performance here, it's really remarkable. The spare back-up lets Nancy improvise and flow with her amazing vocals. I often wondered why Capitol put her with so many orchestras such as Billy May or Gerald Wilson, this girl sounds like a jazz singer, not another Doris Day or Patti Page, and you gotta give her room to breathe and improvise like a Billie Holiday or Sarah Vaughan. The songs are well-chosen and again the arrangements are subtle, which brings out an inspired Nancy.
Golden Nancy with a Jazz Quartet - Great, Great ... The Best July 10, 2000 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass, Gene Bertoncini on guitar - wow! wow! wow! - It's very serious. It's great Nancy. When I first heard her singing "Happiness is Just a Thing Called Joe" I simply wondered why my parents named me Carlos. Buy it now - you deserve it. I've bought some 10 as a gift for my friends. Beyond category.
BUT BEAUTIFUL!!!! August 2, 1999 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a superb album. I sat down trying to list my favorite songs, but ended up listing every song on the album. If you yearn for good music -- not plastic pop music where looks, rather than talent, reigns supreme -- then buy this album. They don't make singers like Nancy anymore; what a tragedy. You will not be disappointed by this album, and you will quickly end up buying everything she's ever made. The early stuff is better than her 80s work, but among the later stuff, Love Nancy is excellent!!!
Why On Earth Won't Nancy Make an Album Like This Now? October 5, 1998 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Nancy uses her superb instrument very well on this album with four famous jazz musicians accompanying her. Happiness is Just a Thing Called Joe, I Thought About You, Oh Look at Me Now and Glad To Be Unhappy are among my favorites. Why can't Nancy just gather some musician friends and make an album like this again. She sounded so great singing on Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz radio show with just piano accompaniment
