In 1987, RCA released a one-disc Elvis compilation called The Number One Hits that featured 18 tracks. So how did the label come up with 12 additional number ones (13 if you count the sensational "A Little Less Conversation" remix that brings the King into the 21st century as a bona fide dance/electronica star)? Well, the '87 compilation featured only Billboard number ones. "In the Ghetto" and "Burning Love" never reached the top there, nor did "Way Down," despite every copy of that 45 selling out on both sides of the Atlantic following Presley's 1977 death. Instead, the new compilers have used the major pop charts in both the U.S. (including Cashbox) and U.K. to determine inclusions. The tracks have all been remixed from original masters, which proves awesome at best (some of the songs have never sounded crisper if, at times, slightly antiseptic) and problematic at worst. Purists will definitely quibble. "A Fool Such As I," for instance, sounds like Elvis rerecorded his vocals. Hank Garland's great guitar solo also sounds different. It might be an alternate take. That's definitely the case with "The Wonder of You." A few lyrics are even different, meaning this isn't the same version as the original 45. Of course, none of that should matter to the youngsters who've been singing along to "Hound Dog" on the Lilo & Stitch soundtrack, or to any other newcomers. Despite the complaints, this is arguably the best single disc Elvis primer to date. Real fans will want to explore much deeper for treasures to be found, but albums like this guarantee that this is one king who will deservedly live very long, if not forever. --Bill Holdship

2 out of 5 stars It's NOT an audio CD   August 10, 2008
This was my first Elvis music purchase and I hate to say it but it's a disappointment. Elvis is great and I like the songs but it's advertised as an audio CD and that's what I thought I was buying - and my receipt says it an audio CD. But it is NOT an audio CD - it is an audio DVD. And being an audio DVD (with no video and no menu) it won't play in ANY of my CD players - not my home CD players and not my car CD player. So I get to listen to Elvis through my tinny TV speakers with no way to select certain songs. Also there are two songs that the audio drops on for about 30 seconds. I ONLY give it two stars because it's Elvis. Sorry Amazon, you dropped the ball on this one.

5 out of 5 stars A Major Source of Joy   July 4, 2008
If you own no Elvis, this is a great place to start. A sparkling collection of raw rock, pop and wail. Songs get progressively more pop/sugar ballad down the list; the listener can feel the influence (sigh) of the market on the choice of songs. There are some bizarre songs like "Wooden Heart", but many keepers that make the disc a real treasure. I can't help wondering what Elvis would think of the "Conversation" remix. Hmmm.

5 out of 5 stars Great Elvis!   July 3, 2008
Just can't get enough of Elvis? This album is for the eternal Elvis Fan and contains his best work. It places great music in one package.

5 out of 5 stars His best single CD collection!   May 2, 2008

This is the best single CD Elvis greatest hits collection available. It includes Elvis' biggest hits from the US and UK. All the songs on this set hit number 1 in either the US or UK or both, including the remix of his classic "A Little Less Conversation" which went to number 1 in the UK (and stayed there for 4 weeks) and several other countries in 2002. This set spans almost his entire career from his first international hit in 1956, "Heartbreak Hotel", right on through the last single to be released before his death in 1977, "Way Down". In between you get classics like "Don't Be Cruel", "Hound Dog", "All Shook Up", "Jailhouse Rock", "Can't Help Falling in Love", "In the Ghetto", "Suspicious Minds", and "Burning Love"! Just about every song is a classic.

This release includes a bonus CD with various mixes of "A Little Less Conversation". While this is a nice package, it is kind of pricey. You can get the US release much cheaper.
