Amazon.com In the late 1950s and early 1960s, folk was one of the hottest trends in pop music--particularly among listeners who considered themselves too mature for teen fare--and the Kingston Trio were the hottest act in folk. The success of the trio's clean-cut, fun-filled, depoliticized presentation inspired lots of imitators (the Brothers Four, the Highwaymen, the Chad Mitchell Trio, etc.), but it also precipitated a backlash among those who considered such collegiate acts sterile and hungered for folk music that was more authentic and socially conscious. This comprehensive two-disc anthology puts the Kingston Trio's accomplishments in perspective but also suggests that they were something of a period piece. With their rousing harmonies, engaging personalities, and ear for catchy material, the trio earned their popularity through favorites such as "Everglades," "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?," and "Greenback Dollar" that still sound fresh today. Yet some of the humor directed toward their source material (Mexicans and rural Southerners) wouldn't pass contemporary standards of taste, while their ode to a not-very-attractive woman, "Take Her Out of Pity," is simply cringeworthy. Though the Kingston Trio were derided for their lack of authenticity, the more "credible" Peter, Paul & Mary were even more of a manufactured act, while even Bob Dylan soon ran afoul of the folk purists. Judged on its musical merits, the best of the Kingston Trio still sounds pretty good. --Don McLeese More Kingston Trio Close-Up/College Concert | The Kingston Trio/...from the "Hungry i" | The Capitol Years |
Album Description The Kingston Trio was one of the biggest pop acts of the late '50s and early '60s, with no less than 14 Billboard Top Ten albums, including five that reached Number One. The two-time Grammy award-winning group jump-started the folk movement, with hits such as "Scotch and Soda" and "Tom Dooley" paving the way for artists such as Peter, Paul & Mary, The Highwaymen, The Limelighters, and Bob Dylan. The Essential Kingston Trio collects 40 of the group's biggest hits and fan favorites, all recorded during their prime years of 1958 to 1964.

Good for all ages August 6, 2008 I went to a Kingston Trio concert recently and really enjoyed it, which motivated me to buy this CD. My four year old grandson also really likes it. The only downside is that he keeps wanting to sing "Charlie on the MTA" even though I have a terrible voice.
The Essential Kingston Trio February 13, 2008 The Kingston Trio is an icon for folk music. This album brings out the best of the Kinston Trio.
One of the most entertaining groups! November 12, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've always enjoyed their folk-style music for the very meaningful lyrics, upbeat rhythm, and the occasional, classy touch of humor at just the right time it the song. This album has all my favorite hits and then some more. The Reuben James, Everglades, Bad Man's Blunder, Rev. Mr. Black, and Greenback Dollar are so descriptive that one can actually visualize the unfolding of a sometimes very serious, sometime very humorous, and even sometimes very spiritual experience. If you enjoy country/folk or simply just good popular music, this album will satisfy your needs. For me it's the kind of music that creates a variety of moods for the listener, such as humor, sadness, romance, valor, spirituality, and a sense of history. I guess it's a generational preference as I listened to most of their hits during the fifties and sixties and that led me to buying most of their albums. It's difficult playing those old 33 1/3 albums but this CD recaptures most of their best work.
Essential Kingston Trio? I think not. October 17, 2007 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm a little disappointed in this collection, the live recordings from the Hungry i are a little weak, almost timid, and sound quality is not so good. I wanted the real stuff, and there ARE some of those familiar great hits, but I guess I should have read the CD information more closely. I could have skipped this one, purchased a "greatest hits" compilation and been a lot happier. Buyer remorse, I guess.

is what i was looking for , plus some curiosity , and in some cases you had to be there and be a Usacian ( usa citizen ) and middle class Chicano living in California like Lucile's Buddy in tv . Interesting that they broke a mold for Dylan and the like to show up , even that i believe is speculation . Some good and whitey tunes . Okey 4 stars
