More romantic Soul from one of the genre's masters. August 3, 2008 This was (almost) as good an album as "Call Me" and "Let's Stay Together". The hit singles "Love and Happinerss", "Oh, Pretty Woman" and the title track helped make this one of Al Green's strongest sellers and a highlight of early-'70s Soul. The only song on this CD which can be labeled a near-miss is "For The Good Times" as it just doesn't hold up in comparison to the album's other tracks.
Simply Beautiful.... July 31, 2008 I just have to say that I've always been a fan of Al, but this is by far my favorite album. This is a collection that you play all the way through. Every song is a hit. It's just pure genious. This should be a greatest hits album in itself. If I had to choose one song that stood out above the rest it would be "Simply Beautiful" which in my humble opinion is Al at his best. His voice is so smooth and full of passion, it brings tears to my eyes. They definitely don't make music like this anymore. If you're a real Al fan and you don't already have this album, you need it now!!!
SOUTHERN SOUL MINISTRY!!!!!!! October 22, 2007 EVERYTHING ON THIS RECORD IS OFF THE CHARTS !!!!!LOVE IT, AL GREEN BACK IN THE DAY WAS THE MAN!A CLASSIC.............TIMELESS
Great Al Green Classic February 8, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is one of the best of Al Greens' collection. I buy it, I play it until it's unplayable, and replace it. My cd collection can't be without it.
5 star album, 1 star mastering job January 31, 2007 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I agree with the other reviews -- this album is excellent and, for me, is Al at his best.
I wanted to add my two cents about this particular edition of it, though. I bought this when it came out just to hear the bonus tracks and was horrified at how horrible this cd sounded compared to the previous cd edition on the same label (The Right Stuff) as well as various other cds that contain some of the same hit tracks. The mastering engineer here definitely used too many of the tools at his disposal in an effort to enhance what was already on the master tapes. Unfortunately removing the analog tape hiss (not that it was excessive to begin with anyway) removed the sense of life from these recordings. And other processing REALLY screwed up some of these songs, causing the vocals to become an unfocused mess (I've heard that this is the result of an attempt to widen the stereo image). Do yourself a favor and seek out the previous cd on the same label (unfortunately no bonus tracks there) or an import version on the Demon label.
