AWFUL May 2, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Do not buy this. Neil Diamond gives you a box set showing just how bad his greatest material can sound when you scream out lyrics, and fall into Vegas. If you want good later live stuff get 1966-1992.
Sometimes I wonder who advised Neil on some of this stuff. He can be so great like on "Tennessee Moon" and "12 Songs," and then he can be just plain lame.
Diamond Is Forever. February 3, 2006 I'm a new-ish Neil Diamond fan. I went to see him on his recent tour, and it was fantastic. 'Live In America,' although recorded over 10 years prior to me seeing him, somehow recaptures how great the show was. I am a big fan of live albums, and this is one of my favorites (and my record collection is pretty big).
The only reason I'm marking it down a star is because I prefer my live albums to sound like they're actually one concert. I don't care if it's from one show or not, as long as it doesn't fade the audience out and leave gaps between each track (as this album does) I'm fine with it. But, this is a minor annoyance.
Sure, his voice has aged, but he still puts on one hell of a show, which translates to this album perfectly. Check it out - I found mine on the Amazon Marketplace for $3.99 - at that price, what is there to lose?
Neil Diamond is a national treasure! November 18, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the greatest version of "Holly Holy" I have heard yet! "America" WOW--It gives me chills! Lost on an island with just one cd forever...this is truly the one! And another hard to find favorite "And the grass won't pay no mind", it's on here, and it's really beautiful. Neil Diamond is the man! Theres my Dad, Jesus, and Neil Diamond :o)
Good but Flawed Document of a Great Tour September 3, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I saw Neil Diamond for the first time on the final night of his Lovescape Tour at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY on June 19, 1993. Neil played "in the round" for this tour. I was a college student at the time and I attended the show with my brother and eight college friends. I've seen well over 100 rock concerts over the past 15 years or so and that show still stands out as one of my favorites. Neil is the consumate showman and his live show boasts the exuberance of a revival.
The '91 - '93 Lovescape Tour featured a generous sampling of Neil's best songs spanning his entire career to that point. Most of Diamond's signature songs (Solitary Man, Sweet Caroline, Holly Holy, America, Cracklin' Rosie, etc.) made regular appearances throughout the tour and they are featured on this set. In addition, Neil dusted off a healthy dose of old chestnuts for the die-hards, some of which are featured here as well: And the Grass Won't Pay No Mind, Lady Oh, and (I believe) the first officially released live version of the old Bang Records classic, You Got to Me.
On the downside, some of the selections are questionable. Believe it or not, Neil does a straight laced rendition of Havah Nagilah. While I'm glad to see this Jewish artist (who has already released two Christmas albums) record a faith-appropriate track, I would have gladly traded this song out for one of the Diamond classics performed during the tour that didn't make the disc like If You Know What I Mean, Desiree, Longfellow Serenade, Shilo or Brooklyn Roads. Also, Neil's original understated rendition of Red Red Wine is vastly superior to the UB40 version that Neil seemed to enjoy playing on the Lovescape tour.
Still, despite the varying source tapes (Neil intentionally selected songs from different nights in an effort to both highlight the best recording of each song from that tour and to represent as many different cities as possible), the sound quality is almost consistently great. That said, there are one or two tracks that sound slightly compressed (similar to a radio broadcast) compared to the relatively excellent sonic quality of the bulk of the set.
This album, while preserving the essential song selection and sequence of a standard setlist during the '91 - '93 tour, does manage to disrupt the overall flow of the concert experience by inserting a fade between each track. In other words, the set plays like a collection of live singles as opposed to a continuous recording from a single show. This issue can be largely alleviated by making your own CDR copy of the show and cross fading each track by 5 seconds (i.e. adjusting the recording so that the last five seconds of the previous track and the first five seconds of the next track play simultaneously). In fact, that's exactly what I did to improve my listening experience by helping to simulate a continuous concert. Still, that's a bit of extra work that shouldn't be necessary after buying an officially released live product like this.
Now, despite my enthusiasm for Neil's performance on the Lovescape tour, this is his fifth live album. And while there are a handful of songs unique to this particular live album (including You Got to Me, Hooked on a Memory of You, and River Deep, Mountain High), if you have all the others, I'm not sure there's enough here to warrant purchasing another live album. And if you're only going to purchase one live album, Hot August Night (Neil's legendary recording from the Greek Theater in August of '72) is the one to get. But, if you saw Neil perform on the '91 - '93 tour, this is an enjoyable document.
He's still got it... March 4, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Yes, I am going to defend this cd. Seems like everyone on here trashes it. I have Gold, Hot August Night 1+2, and while this isn't as good as those; it's not as bad as everyone claims it to be. For a sixty year old, Neil can still sing. He's a little more gravily at times, but his energy makes up for that. The collection of songs is great. He does a lot of his older, upbeat tunes. I bought this on Amazon used for $2! For this price, how can you not afford to give it a chance?
