AWESOME!!!!! July 20, 2010 M. Craddock This is one of those recordings that I have owned in all formats! 8Track, Album, Cassette, and now CD. A true classic! Nobody plays like LEon... he has his own style. Very cool!
Confessions From The Rock N Roll Circus Tent May 4, 2010 Andre S. Grindle (Brewer Maine) Relatively new to solo recording,in fact his third album in at this point Leon Russell was completely poised to make his major individual statement. Hi debut album had linked him with all of the rock stars he's worked with in that time and this album was going to be Leon doing his thing alone more or less. This is a concept album with a sound that is actually very individual for it's time. Leon Russell has always been one to emphasize his "southerness" in his music and the closest comparasin on that respect would be Dr.John. Leon however has a far looser approch than even him, incorperating a great deal of improvisational piano stylings and jazz styled harmonics into his songwriting approch and that mix of southern rock (sort of) and jazziness quite a lot of the times winds up as something close to soul/R&B and (later) funk. On this album the basic songs are where it's at and they're all pretty good, with the piano mixed up high for the most part. The concept of the album is a very witty and reflective outlook on the idea of rock stars of that time in comparasin to carnival folks;on "Tight Rope","Out In The Woods","Me And Baby janes","Roller Derby",the title song and "If Any Shoe Fits" he keeps the concept going steady as he observes on the romantic entanglements, the bizzare musings and the contradictions involved in his rock star/carney metaphore-often enough in the most colorful terms possible. There are also some especially attention getting musical diversions here as well in the deeply Zydaco based "Cajun Love Song" and the extremely psychedelic choral style of "Acid Annapolis". One thing I was most curious about on this album was Leon's original version of "This Masquerade". As with most people I've only ever heard George Benson's famous hit version and am happy to say that the two versions are quite similar, the differences being Leon's drawlier vocal delivery and the somewhat more spare production here. Honestly I love both versions about equal and it's a wonderful arrangement regardless. Even though this is probably his best known album Leon Russell is known more as a songwriter and musician for the most part than for any of his own accomplishments. And while the quirkiness and shifting musical flavors of this album may sometimes raise a few eyebrows the songs themselves really tell the story.
The Leon album to have if you are only having one. March 5, 2010 T. Willardson (Salt Lake City, Utah) If you are only going to have one Leon Russell album in your collection, this is the one to have. If you are going to have several, this one must be included. The songs are largely poignant, but powerfully so. Roller Derby, on the other hand, may make you laugh out loud. My Cricket is both funny and sad at the same time. All of the tracks are highly evocative. Leon's performance and composition are both brilliant. With the sole exception of Acid Annapolis, every track on this album is a winner.
Great music, what a musician November 4, 2009 Debra Miller (Athens, AL USA) I loved Carney when it came out, and it is even better now. Leon Russell is such a master at his music, with the unique blend of styles. Carney is one of his best.
GREAT CD June 5, 2009 Connie (Dallas, TX USA) This is one of the best Leon Russell CD's on the planet.
Nice to see it available after all these years.
I love listening to this CD.
