Out of this world. November 22, 2009 eliasastro One of the best Callas recordings. Simply out of this world. Who cares about vocal decline, the maturity and emotional force of this voice is so extremely rare, that makes this recording a rare and precious document.
Excellent sound and production.
I actually cried. . . October 5, 2009 Michael Scott (Coquitlam, British Columbia Canada) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really did. I'm talking about the original Angel vinyl set which I bought in the seventies as a total opera neophyte. This was the first time I heard "Casta Diva", and I was truly awed and moved. I am not given to easy expression of emotion, so it was inexplicable and almost disturbing to me to find tears streaming down my cheeks. I listened to it often, and never failed to be moved by Callas' voice. I am not qualified to comment on the technical side of things, but I found her voice incredibly sensual and powerful. I still do. I have Sutherland and have listened to many other versions, but none of them come close to this recording. Sutherland is strong and clean, but she ruins it with ludicrously excessive coloratura. This is a drama, not a showcase for glitzy technique!
When I had to choose between vinyl and CDs, and gave away about 400 LPs, I kept some of my favourite recordings, including this one, of course. I spent hours trying to transfer it to CD, but I am no recording engineer and the result was worthless. I'm not sure why I haven't bought the CD before. Maybe I just lost sight of it, or continued to believe I "have" the 1960 Callas Norma. I do, but I don't have a turntable!
I have just ordered the CD and am counting the days till I can hear Callas' Casta Diva after an abstinence of 4 or 5 years.
Bellini - Norma / Maria Callas, Ludwig, Corelli, Zaccaria, Teatro alla Scala, Serafin June 15, 2009 C. Christie (Germantown, TN USA) Bought as a gift for my husband, who loves opera. He loves this recording.
Simply superb March 11, 2009 G.D. (Norway) It is rather curious that music-lovers are so divided over which of the two famous performances (this one and the 1954 set) by Callas as Norma is the better. Usually, the trade-off is seen as one between quality of voice and interpretative depth. But to be honest - the difference isn't really that big; noticeable, maybe, but no greater than to make me sign up for this later set mostly because of the superior sound quality of a stereo setting (yes, there are trade-offs when it comes to the rest of the cast as well; both are superb, so anyone interested in the opera should hear both).
Of course, the most famous number, "Casta diva" is fabulous, maybe technically not perfect, but so beautifully sung and full of feeling that it is a wonder. But where Callas reigns supreme is really in some of the lesser-known numbers, such as the glorious "Dormono entrambi!" and the "O rimembranza" duet in act 1. However, the reason why this set constitutes one of the greatest opera recordings ever made (despite the fact that, in my view, musically the work is some distance from being a masterpiece) isn't only Callas. Christa Ludwig's performance as Adalgisa isn't much less impressive than Callas' Norma, and Franco Corelli is simply breathtaking. I would also like to single out Zaccaria's Oroveso as probably the best ever with his warm and characterful bass.
Nothing to complain about with the choral and orchestral contributions under Serafin, and sound quality is clear and vivid, although maybe a little too immediate.
Running Out of Superlatives September 20, 2008 MikelMask (Maryland, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
There is not much more that can be said about this recording. It is one of the finest performances on CD. The pairing of Callas and Corelli is one for the ages and results in a performance that will not be bettered. The other singers, especially Christa Ludwig, all add to the magnificence of the proceedings. Tullio Serafin directs it all demonstrating his great knowledge and experience with the score and his performers. Norma is one of most dramatic operas in the literature and Callas and Corelli are inspired playing off of each other in their roles. Although an older recording, the sound is excellent. This is opera at its best.
