Amazon.com essential recording Neil Diamond wanted the best of both worlds. Determined to prove himself as a serious singer-songwriter, the former Brill Building denizen made a portentous stab at African music on the same album that held the awesome Top 40 hit "Cracklin' Rosie" (Tap Root Manuscript) and alternated autobiography ("I Am... I Said") with simple singalongs ("Song Sung Blue"). While not up to the level of the Bang Records singles collected on Classics: The Early Years, these often fine tracks hardly deserve to be dismissed. --Rickey Wright
Album Description Import 12-track collection, originally released in 1974. Universal.

Great songs July 28, 2007 Four stars because by now there are many more extensive Neil Diamond compilations available. This set of 12 classic songs demonstrates Diamond's compositional skills and great voice with catchy tunes, heartfelt delivery and impressive arrangements. The many cover versions of these tracks are proof of their enduring appeal. A song like I'm A Believer has more depth of feeling in Diamond's own version than the more popular Monkees cover, while on the ballads like Shilo his voice has a certain haunting tone that still gives me gooseflesh after all these years. Sweet Caroline, Holly Holy, Cracklin' Rosie and I Am I Said are my personal favorites on this collection. These are classy pop songs by a great composer and lyricist.

As previously stated, this is a remaster of a previous Vinyl LP. It is a very SMALL improvement of the previous CD, MCAD 37252, ASIN No. B00000DWHI. Failing to hear a significant difference on my stereo, I used Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge Studio to measure it. At best, it is a 10% improvement. I recommend against replacing your current CD if you already own MCAD 37252.
The First and the Best December 2, 2005 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
There have been many Best-Of Neil Diamond Compilation albums released by MCA.But this is the first, and by far the best.Every track fits the track before and after it.The studio versions instead of live recordings. All his MCA hits are here, and they still sound great.
Many of MCA's other compilation have lacked the simple focus of this album. These are Neil's big MCA Hits soon after they were hits. The compilations from later years have been more about non-singles that became concert favorites.
The late 60's/early 70's was the best period of Neil's career:Powerful songs with personal lyrics and soaring arrangements. And great rockers with a distinctive honey-and-toast flavour.
Neil Diamond - 12 Greatest Hits September 30, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The best Greatest Hits album of Diamonds career. It doesn't have the live versions of Holy Holly or Sweet Caoline like the vinyl album and tape had. That's a negative. They are way better than the studio recordings.
