| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com Neil Diamond's entry in MCA's multivolume 20th Century Masters points up the essential flaw of the whole series. While the title suggests a sort of time capsule--something truly representative of an artist's best work--that turns out to be true only to the extent that the label controls that material. Thanks to the budget-minded nature of the project, no attempts were made to include any of Diamond's great hits recorded for the Bang label, or the wildly successful adult-contemporary fare he did later for Columbia. True, there are some great hits here from the second phase of his career--"Sweet Caroline," "Holly Holy," "Song Sung Blue," and "I Am... I Said"--but the set ignores three Top 20 hits from this period, so it's less than definitive. Still, if you pair it with another greatest-hits package, Classics: The Early Years, you've got a pretty good collection of Diamond's best stuff. --Daniel Durchholz

Great summary of the ABC years for ND August 23, 2008 Over the years, Neil Diamond has switched record labels so many times it's funny. So many times, it's almost impossible to have the perfect Neil Diamond collection. There's always x, y and z missing or something like that.
However, MCA Records (now owned by Geffen Records), which now owns and operates the rights to Diamond's ABC years, cashed in on yet another Diamond compilation with his 1999 installment in UMG's ongoing '20th Century Masters' series.
This isn't a terrible Diamond compilation. It does fulfill it's purpose, which is collect 11 of his most well-known MCA sides. 'Sweet Caroline,' 'Holly Holy,' 'I Am...I Said,' and 'Brooklyn Roads' are all on this set.
As always, UMG does a superb job remastering the tracks. The sound quality is excellent!
However, the three stars aren't here for the music. Every song here is definitely worth five stars. But, I think they could have included one or two songs from another label. For example, 'Cherry Cherry' would be a fine choice to include on a best-of.
If you want a bare bones, basic Diamond hits collection, than '20th Century Masters' just might satisfy your needs. For everybody else that wants more Diamond for their buck, I strongly recommend 'Classics' or 'The Neil Diamond Collection' for a single disc retrospective, or if you want more, pick up the two CD set 'Greatest Hits.'
Overall, you can't go wrong with Neil Diamond. But, keep in mind there are better ND collections on the market.
This is recommended for new fans, casual fans and budget-minded fans alike, but again, you must keep in mind that there are better options than this 11-song and relatively skimpy compilation.
Classic Neil August 13, 2008 This has a nice mix of Neil Diamond songs, especially good for those who don't like everything he has done but prefer select tunes. There are several "extra" songs that I did not care for, things I'd never heard or that just didn't reflect his quality or style; it would have been better had the producers opted to use some of the songs they left out (i.e. Shiloh, Cherry-Cherry, You'll Be a Woman Soon). Overall, it's a great addition to my collection and very reasonably priced.
The album "12 Greatest Hits" should have been September 22, 2007 In Nov.1989 I bought a used vinyl LP of "Neil Diamond:His 12 Greatest Hits" on MCA.I was a bit disappointed that "Sweet Caroline" & "Holly Holy" were live versions.(It didn't even say on the cover or label these songs were "live"!) Not that the live versions are bad,it's just that I expected the studio versions I'd always heard on radio. This Millennium Collection corrects that & includes the studio versions of those songs, not to mention far better sound quality than the LP.I would have liked to see "Done Too Soon" from the LP here but I'm glad they didn't include the inferior re-recording of one of his Bang label hits,"Shilo". This is the best single disc album of Diamond's early 70's work for the UNI/MCA label.
Skimpy collection July 28, 2007 The tracks on this millennium collection are very similar to those on his Neil Diamond - His 12 Greatest Hits album. Still, they represent a particulaly fertile period in the late 1960s and early 1970s when his melodic prowess was at a peak on songs like Sweet Caroline, Cracklin' Rosie, Song Sung Blue and I Am I Said. A song like Holly Holy has a defnite spiritual undertone. This music demonstrates his authenticity as a major composer and consummate vocalist. Although the album provides a great listening experience, it is incomplete and does not even remotely represent all of his bst work from the 20th century.
Perfect!!! January 9, 2007 This was exactly what I was looking for. I am very pleased. Keep 'em coming!!!!
