Amazon.com Is Sarah McLachlan a secret punk rocker? To be sure, her rebellion is hushed. On Afterglow, her first studio album since 1997's Surfacing, McLachlan's music is as tempered as ever; at times even the piano chords at the heart of the sound are tucked neatly beneath layer upon layer of strings and overdubbed voices. Listen to what's being sung within this soothing aural bed, though, and hear the just-before-sleep murmurings of the quietest riot grrl: "I'm a train wreck waiting to happen.... a wildfire born of frustration," "How stupid could I be.... you're no good for me, but you're the only one I see," "I have to push just to see how far you'll go." The latter song ("Push") resolves itself with the assurance, "You complete me." Ultimately, McLachlan fans will be comforted again by what turns out to be her reliably untroubled aesthetic. --Rickey Wright

Another wonderful album! June 9, 2008 Sarah McLachlan is one of my favorite artists and this album provides more of her signature style. An incredibly beautiful voice, haunting melodies, and emotional lyrics mark this as another wonderful album!
Hauntingly Breathtaking June 8, 2008 When Sarah McLachlan released "Surfacing" in 1997, it became a big hit, full of songs that are still on the airwaves more than a decade later. So when "Afterglow" came out in 2003, it was quickly scrutinized and compared to its predecessor. And while it has a different sound, the album is a lush, lyrical treat.
For the most part, "Afterglow" is full of ballads - songs that feature McLachlan's distinct vocals accompanied by piano and strings. But there is some fire here. 'Fallen' is a beautiful description of the mistakes we make in life, while 'World on Fire' shows vulnerability and uncertainty. And 'Stupid' is so brilliantly crafted that you will be humming it for days.
So what is it about this album that makes it so appealing? The descriptive lyrics, for one thing. In 'Drifting', for example, McLachlan sings, "Larger than life is your fiction in a universe made up of one." The songs are near-poetry that rivets the heart and describes the complexities of pain, love, and life. And the string arrangements are soothing, mellowing out the record.
Overall, "Fallen" is an album worth checking out. Is it different than McLachlan's other work? Definitely. But different isn't necessarily bad. And in this case, it's hauntingly breathtaking.
DVD&CD June 3, 2008 I have watched DVD a lot and listened to the CD numerous times. Sarah and her band was very good on the concert. I would recommend a must buy for music lovers.
