5 out of 5 stars Zappa the way you like it!   June 26, 2008
For every hardcore Zappa fan, the fan that really knows he was without peer on the guitar, this album is what you've been looking for. DC Boogie is thirteen minutes of pure Zappa guitar bliss and well worth the price paid for the album. You will not be disappointed, Frank at his live performance best with superlative engineering and sound. Inspirational liner notes from none other than the master Steve Vai. Glad I bought it!

P.S. I sure miss Frank Zappa.

5 out of 5 stars Another glowing review   May 30, 2008
I'm not going to reinvent the wheel here, as many others have already dissected the album in detail. Bottom line: If you appreciate Frank's instrumental music (a la Hot Rats, Grand Wazoo, Guitar, etc.) at all, BUY THIS ALBUM, you will not be disappointed. This disc has spent a lot more time in my player than any other CD since I bought it...occasionally I will dim the lights, crank up the volume, and treat myself to a FZ concert. Awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Top form Frank   February 27, 2008
I enjoy the inventiveness of Frank's instrumental works more so than many of his other stylistic skewerings. From what I know about this disc, this is the Petit Wazoo that also recorded The Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka. Both of these classic albums have the dirty, funky, and truly Frank instrumentals that are indicative of this period. Much of this dirt/funk is reminiscent of Apostrophe (') in style and texture. This is the Zappa that is most intriguing to me...that down and dirty blues.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic but not nearly enough   February 8, 2008

I WANT MORE OF THIS KIND OF STUFF

This is a live CD from Zappa's 1972 tour, in between Waka Jawaka and the Grand Wazoo. This touring band had 10 members and about half were on those studio albums. The music on this CD is big band jazz/rock along the lines of those two albums (with trumpets, trombones, etc.) The CD is 60 minutes long and the sound quality is very good, although not perfect.

The music on this CD is absolutely fantastic. It is just great jazz jamming by Zappa and many of the band members. There are some very unique and long Zappa solos. There are some great brass solos. And, rare for a Zappa live album is a drum solo, which is pretty good.

What makes this CD special is that this is the first time I have heard this style of music played live by Zappa. It is very different than anything else I have heard from him...and I own almost all of his studio and live albums, plus a number of bootlegs....plus I had seen him in concert many times.

There are a couple of problems with this album:
-at 60 minutes it is just too short. I WANT MORE!!!!
Why wasn't more included? He typically played for more than 2 hours per show.
-I think that in this case, the talking and the audience participation detracts from the album. It is mostly an instrumental album, so the audience banter kind of ruins the atmosphere. It is OK to hear once, but for a CD that is this good, I will be playing it over and over again, and the talking interrupts the flow of the music.
At one point, Zappa polls the audience for about 5 minutes on how to finish up the song they are playing. It is cute, but I don't want to hear it again.

It is great that some of the other Zappa bands are finally getting released on CD. Most of the live releases have been heavy on the Ike Willis/Ray White bands. There are so many other great bands that haven't seen the light of vinyl.

I would like to see more of this band released. I would also love to hear the other big band, with Jean Luc-Ponty and the Underwoods. There were also the great tours with Adrian Belew (although a few songs from Belew have found their way on to CD).

5 out of 5 stars A guitar genius   January 15, 2008
I have to admit that I am quite bias to this album since Frank Zappa is my favorite artist of all time. The music he released between '71-'76 is in my opinion his best work.

This album, coined as the Petite Wazoo, was recorded live in '72. The horn section put together for this short stretch of touring is incredible.

The title track will blow you away. The track "Montreal" is also a real delite to listen to. Do yourself a favor and pick this up if you already haven't. You will also need the latest release "Wazoo" which is the full 20-piece band from '72 in a 2-disc format.

Frank Zappa hands down is a guitar god!
