1 out of 5 stars Bought this out of boredom.   June 12, 2008

Sorry folks, I'm mostly a metal guy.
After fifty years of hype, I was bored and picked this one up hoping to expand my musical tastes.
Um, didn't happen. Not till Ray of Light anyway.
The title track is the only decent song on the disc.
Every other song is manufactured pop drivel.
Pass.

The year: 1992. The premise: "Shock and Awe" The result: Madonna's second best album to date (behind Ray Of Light).
Sure, the accompanying coffee table book "Sex" was the headline grabbing news item of the day, but what few realized was that the CD that was released with it was nothing short of musical nirvana. Yes, I said nirvana. That's a strong statement, but have you listened to Erotica? I mean, LISTENED to it? It's pure genius.

The theme throughout the album is that Madonna is "Dita" the dominatrix. And that's exactly what happens during the 80 minutes that follow. Madonna is in charge. She will tell you what to feel, how to feel it, and just when you think you can't take anymore, you can. Not a simple feat on a CD.

Dark, moody, and sexy are the colors she paints with on this album. This is Madonna's show and you are only there because she said so. You never forget who is in charge, and honestly, you like it that way. Sure, there are "softer" moments on the CD ("Rain", "Secret Garden", "Bad Girl") but those are the softer moments SHE allows you to witness... but only for a moment.

She also gives you a few minutes to dance ("Deeper and Deeper" "Bye Bye Baby", "Fever") but even then, She is calling the shots and you are left to her wishes.

This entire CD is both amazing inside and out. Some little known facts about this amazing CD:

"In This Life" is based on George Gershwin's Prelude No. 2.
"Erotica" and "Deeper and Deeper" videos were shot in near identical style to many Andy Warhol films.
"Erotica" is Madonna's first album to bear a "Parental Advisory" label.
"Bad Girl" was planned as the second single from the album with an X-rated video to match.
Originally, the album was to feature completely different artwork. Warner Bros. Records refused to use it, as it was too explicit.

Perhaps not a CD you would throw in while delivering the kids to soccer practice, but undeniably one of Madonna's finest concoctions.

Give it up... do as Madge says, give it up and let Madge have her way........What's in a name? Madonna defines herself as a true diva in everyone's favourite Madonna album, "Erotica". The diva herself made it quite clear to me, to address her by her god given name, one day at an autograph signing party. I addressed her as "Mad,Donna" and she reacted with authoritative intensity. She pointed her white crooked finger at me and remarked 'Hey!!...No one EVER calls me that." and simply bypassed my cd waiting to be signed. It was at this time I knew Madonna had arrived, in true dominatrix fashion, claiming her reign as "Mistress Madonna", which I hear is what she demands to be called in "certain circles". This being said, "Erotica" showcases the tough, edgier, darker side of Madonna which no one had seen in full flair before the albums release. "Erotica" became an instant classic in the gay club scene and became the urban young gay man's soundtrack during the early roaring ninties. Some of Madonna's best are on "Erotica", including the title track, "Fever", "Bye Bye Baby", "Deeper and Deeper", "Thief of Hearts", "Bad Girl", and "Rain". All of Madonna's style, mystery, and sexuality climaxed during this rare time of fun, freedom, and sexual exploration. It cannot be duplicated and you were privliged to experience this moment in time.
