Album Description
FROM THE CREATORS AND PRODUCERS OF THE IRISH PHENOMENON CELTIC WOMAN COMES THE NEXT GENERATION IN IRISH BALLAD MUSIC, THE HIGH KINGS. Finbarr Clancy, Martin Furey, Brian Dunphy and Darren Holden - renowned vocalists and musicians - have come together to form the hottest Irish folk and ballad group to emerge since The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem electrified the worldwide folk revival of the 1960s. The musical producer is the highly acclaimed David Downes, who is the musical genius behind Celtic Woman and formerly the musical director of Riverdance. He brings intricate harmonies and driving rhythms to The High Kings songbook, giving them a freshness and sparkle that is infectious. A rousing TV special was filmed in Dublin and is available on DVD (The High Kings: Live in Dublin).

5 out of 5 stars The High Kings CD   October 8, 2008
I have listened to this cd several times now, and have enjoyed it every time. The songs are generally traditional, and I can hear touches of The Chieftains and The Fureys in the arrangements and voices, which for me, makes it all the more enjoyable. The High Kings are proof that you don't need to have real fancy arrangements to make a song come alive - just a lot of talent and heart. I went back and listened to some old cds with similar songs (some the same), and they were nowhere near as good. I would definitely recommend this cd to anyone who likes traditional Irish (and some Scottish) music.

This is by far and wide one of my favorite CDs. I own the Celctic Woman as well, and I'm not actually sure which one I prefer. The music on this CD is quality, the sound excellent, and I bring this in the car with me for long trips whenever I go somewhere by myself.

I did not find this to be close to good Irish music.
I too, bought this CD without hearing any songs, or
even knowing WHO The High Kings are.

Their sound is boring to me, there are no surprises.
I thought I'd be hearing some real Irish authentic
music, instead they seem to try way too hard to fit
into the modern world, especially with the song "From
Galway to Graceland." I really felt that song was awful
and un-necessary.

I have learned the hard way...Never buy a CD you don't
know!

If you are a lover of Irish folk music in the vein of the Clancy Brothers, this CD is for you. One of the High Kings is a son of one of the Clancy's, and the connection shows. This is like the gold standards the Clancy Brothers used to sing updated and made modern without anything going missing on the way. After seeing the High Kings in a PBS special, I bought the CD for my part-Irish husband, and he must have played it ten times in a row as soon as he got it.

If you heard and liked Celtic Women, go for the male version, too. It's lovely!
