Our Third Annual Green Issue Featuring Madonna

MADONNARAMA! Madonna has struck pose after provocative pose since her 1982 debut. Is her latest incarnation, as activist and filmmaker, bringing her closer to the truth? Rich Cohen undergoes a multi-media bombardment—her new album, her directorial debut, and her documentary on the orphans of Malawi, where she adopted her third child—to prepare for a session with the icon herself. Photographs by Steven Meisel.

3 out of 5 stars I am always a little disappointed in Vanity Fair   May 11, 2008

It has just gotten so I don't know, crass? Celebrity driven. Youth driven. Sexist. Ageist. I got sucked in because, well, Madonna. I thought, OK maybe it will be an interesting interview. And the green issue. In an impulsive moment I bought it because I had seen it at Whole Foods and didnt buy it at the time and now the newest issue was on the shelves... The Madonna article was basically a waste of time. I have read 2 of the interviewer's books ( Rich Cohen , he wrote Tough Jews, an excellent and totally entertaining book about the Jews in the Mafia. Great historical account of the birth of the Italian Mafia, scenes of historical New York, and how the unions began. Loved it! Also enjoyed his recent book about his family's story and the Sweet and Low company)
But man, Rich while a fantastic writer, was so disappointingly ageist! Madonna is turning 50, good for her and all of us who will eventually be turning 50! But damn, he made it sound like she was all washed up...seemingly surprised that she was pretty when he met her but had comments like : what will she be doing when the idea of sleeping with Madonna is a fetish. Or , pondering what will she be like at 65 or 70. Do we do this with male artists? How many older men are still considered vital artists? Practically all of them ( and I am happy to see these guys still doing it and better than ever) . The Rolling Stones. Robert Plant, Todd Rundgren, many the reunion tours going on this summer...Neil Diamond touring. Willie Nelson touring ( he is 75 gd bless him!) .... but women at 50 , gasp! How dare they be still sexy! Cher and Bette Midler at 60 something are performing hard, and Tina Turner is getting ready to tour again at 68. Why does Rich question Madonna at 50? Let people create no matter their ages.
There also was a fantastic article with stunning archival photos of Doris Day in her movie star days. OK vanity Fair regains some points because they do have some excellent articles like these sometimes, between the stupid cheesecake starlets and celebrity party goers and incessant advertisements with incessant celebrity "models".
