Album Description While The Rankin Family may have spurred the interest in Celtic music in Canada, Great Big Sea were the ones to really take the style and run with it, bringing it to a younger audience that previously regarded it as a style more suitable for fishermen and grandparents. This self-titled debut is the most traditional of the group's albums, both earnest and upbeat. Warner Music Canada. 1993.
Album Details Celtic Newfoundlander's 1992 Debut. Traditional Sounds, Simplistic Values and Endless Oceanic Imagery: This is the Great Big Sea. This Recording features 'The Fisherman's Lament', 'Irish Paddy', 'Drunken Sailor', 'Someday Soon' and More.

Road Rage April 14, 2002 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this CD after owning Rant and Roar and Road Rage. I was also lucky enough to catch them live at The Bowery Ballroom in March 2002. This Cd captures their young energy mixed of course with their roots in tradition. This band draws the audience in with give and take singing. Everybody at the show, is in the show. They make everybody there wish they were from New Foundland!...
A wave of sound you've got to hear! August 17, 2000 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Their first album, but one of their best! It really shows you the raw talent that these guys began with, and all the musicality that they've developed. It's amazing to listen to- especially if you know their newer stuff. If you ever get a chance to see them in concert- GO!!! They are great. If you don't know anything about their music- it's a bit of Irish and Nautical mixed together. Lots of energy, upbeat songs, ballads, and tradition folk tunes. Go for it!

THIS IS JUST A VERY SHORT REVIEW FROM BRIAN BORU TRAPPED IN A 45 YEAR OLD NEW ENGLANDER'S BODY WHO KNOWS IN ANOTHER LIFE HE LISTENED & SANG THE SAME MUSIC THESE BOYS ARE PLAYING. I HAVEN'T BEEN THIS EXCITED ABOUT A BAND AND IT'S SOUND SINCE THE FIRST TIME I LISTENED TO THE CHIEFTANS 19 YEARS AGO. I'M READY TO GO TO SEA WHENEVER THESE BOY'S WANT TO GO!
Best Great Big Sea April 2, 2000 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I got to know Great Big Sea while working in Geulph Ontario Canada and working with a girl from Newfoundland. This is a great album, with much richness in words and music. Traditional and yet modern in a good way. It reminds me of Canada and those times. You will enjoy it. It is simple and beautiful. Untouched by the "states" complexities.
Excellent music! March 13, 2000 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This album is quite different from their newer stuff - less pop-like - but it's great. Relaxing seafaring music for the true GBS fan!
