Since the 1950s, the album Clifford Brown with Strings has set the standard for playing ballads on the trumpet. In the 1980s, Wynton Marsalis's Hot House Flowers was a welcome addition to that ballad tradition. With Moment to Moment, Roy Hargrove sets a soft tone for the 21st century. Backed by alto saxophonist Sherman Irby, pianist Larry Willis, bassist Gerald Cannon, and drummer Willie Jones III, Hargrove's tender trumpet and fluegelhorn beautifully combine the best of Freddie Hubbard's power and Art Farmer's phrasing. Draped with pillow-soft orchestrations by Hargrove, Willis, Cedar Walton, and Gil Goldstein, the leader sings through his horn with a longing and lyrical melodic touch. Chestnuts like "You Go to My Head," Antonio Carlos Jobim's "How Insensitive," and the title track by Henry Mancini come alive with the same freshness found on Hargrove's newer gems, including Pat Metheny's tearful "Always and Forever" and the trumpeter's own "Natural Wonders." Simply put, this offering from Roy Hargrove is a splendid love letter for a new century. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff   March 5, 2007

I have a couple of Roy Hargrove CDs now and I think he's gifted. I especially like the way he tries out different ideas from straight ahead jazz, like The RH Factor "HardGroove" project, for instance, where he collaborated with popular hip-hop and neo soul artistes.

I think this is another great idea that has worked really well. Backed by the Monterey Jazz Festival Orchestra, Hargrove's horn, (whether trumpet or flugelhorn), blends in nicely with Sherman Irby's alto saxophone and with their trio, made up of Larry Willis on piano, Gerald Cannon on bass and Willie Jones, III on drums, they cruise through a set of standards that are dreamy. This is the kind of music I enjoy listening to while driving long distances at night. It is relaxing enough to make the journey pleasant and stress-free but challenging enough to ensure I stay awake and alert.

Favourite tunes are the Coots/Gillespie standard "You Go To My Head", the fantastic Pat Metheny classic "Always And Forever", the Hargrove-penned "Natural Wonders", the Jobim standard "How Insensitive", "Peri", written by Gerald Cannon and "Another Time", written by Willie Jones, III.

These are just my favourite standouts though. I love the entire album and hope Hargrove does more of this in the future. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible   February 12, 2007
The warmth of this cd overwhelms you. I must say playing along with the Orchestra has a heart of its own. This cd is something to treasure. Roy Hargrove is sensational with strings. A must have for Roy Hargrove fans to see him venture even further.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Trumpet   November 30, 2005

I have dozens of albums in my car, but Moment to Moment finds its way to my cd player more often than any other album. The quality of Hargrove's trumpet is the best one could ask for. The musical choices are perfect for producing a contemplative mood. I could never part with this work. Every piece is a treasure.

3 out of 5 stars simply doesnt do justice to him live   April 9, 2004

roy will give you a raging heart/head ache when he plays any of these ballads live. sets the mood in > wham. consider yourself warned...

no fear, he'll (most likely) shake you out of it w. some funk, be bop, or hip hop tune his way - & but will leave an indelible romantic mark.

I don't need a thousand words, this cd is simply beautiful.
Great ballads for dinner with a beautiful woman and great bottle of wine and just to dig the wonderful sounds of Roy Hargrove.
