Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
Cash Money/Universal Motown Records multi-platinum artist Lil Wayne is once again taking control of the airwaves and breaking records in both with "Lollipop," the first single from his highly anticipated album Tha Carter III. This is the biggest add week that a hip-hop artist has received at Rhythm Crossover and the biggest any artist has received at Urban Radio including Beyonce and Mariah.

"Lollipop," is being well received at key radio stations across the country including: New York (Hot 97), Los Angeles (Power), Seattle (93 KUBE), Miami (99 Jamz), Philadelphia (Power 99), Atlanta (Hot 107) and Detroit (Hot 102). Lil Wayne's MySpace page received over a million unique views this week giving him the #1 Top Artist profile on the site. The video is currently in heavy rotation at MTV, MTV2, BET's Rap City and MTV Jams, where it appeared as the Jam Of The Week. The "Lollipop" video is also in medium rotation at MTV Hits and on BET's main playlist. Lil Wayne will also appear on BET's annual Spring Bling and will be only the 2nd artist in the event's history to perform for an entire episode!

Since the release of his last CD, the platinum selling Tha Cater II, Lil Wayne has guest appearances on over 70 songs for other artists including Fat Joe's 2008 Grammy nominated single "Make It Rain," DJ Khaled's "We Taking Over," and Wyclef Jeans' "Sweetest Girl." He also released a duet CD with Bryan "Birdman" Williams titled Like Father, Like Son in 2006 which was a critical and commercial success.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to say...   July 24, 2008

On the first listen through I was amazed by the quality of production on this album. Kudos to Wayne for a legendary line-up of producers. Lots of creative, original beats and ideas for songs. So 5 stars on production and beats.

Second time through I usually pay more attention to lyrical styles and structures. The one thing I do have against Wayne is his lyrical style. Personally I prefer a strong lyrical hip-hop artist (ex. Black Thought, Guru, Gift of Gab, Plug 1, Common, Mos Def, Talib, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien) over a strong production rapper. Wayne's style is a standard 4 bar "punch-line" structure which I'm not saying is a bad style however it does get old song after song. If he was able to use other styles such as shadow boxin', I may have a little more respect for him as an MC but stickin to one style doesn't make you a great. Also not a huge fan of his voice but thats just me. So 2.5 stars for lyrics.

Last part: overall flow and style of CD. Now this is a hard category to rate in but here it goes. I personally prefer the underground scene of hip-hop and just because a artist is not in that scene doesn't mean I don't like them, I just judge them to the standards of quality of good hip-hop. I don't think The Carter series should be labeled as a classic in hip-hop albums because there are so many that are much better. Every song here was produced as singles which creates a very dynamic CD, however it does not create a classic album. A hip-hop classic has a link song after song and a story to tell, I just can't get it from this album. So 3 stars for overall flow/style.

Now averaging these together you get exactly 3.5, so boo to amazon for not allowing half stars. Due to the number of great albums that have also came out I'll have to put it on the lower side of 3.5. Feel free to comment and discuss..

Jason

P.S. For anyone trying to justify this album by sales...

Sales does NOT equal lyrical ability, just what the mainstream want to promote..sry.

5 out of 5 stars Like any classic - grows on you   July 24, 2008

I hated this album at first, especially relative to Carter II and some of Wayne's mixtapes, but then I went back to listening to self- conscious, overcerebrated artists like Lupe, Common and Hieroglyphics, and couldn't stand them. Going back to Carter III I realized how fresh it is in comparison and how much it had grown on me, in particular tracks like Mr. Carter, Phone Home and Let the Beat Build. Wayne's lyrics have fallen off, or at least failed to mature, but his pure unfiltered exuberance is contagious and that makes him the rarest kind of artist in my book.

1 out of 5 stars Diminishing Returns on Tha Carter Trilogy   July 23, 2008

Tha Carter III was probably the most anticipated album of the year after many delays, publicity, and strong sales of the Tha Carter II many fans awaited this release. Being a big fan of Like Father, Like Son, and of course the Tha Carter, produced by the one and only talented Mannie Fresh this album fails to deliver in almost every aspect, lyrically and commercially. I really don't know where to begin with this album, but lets just say that Lil wayne needs to seriously ease up on the "Purple Drank", or the "Syrup" because he sounds like he's free styling the whole album and simultaneously struggling to stay awake. It seems as though Lil Wayne cannot write lyrics anymore, its just a few punch lines here and there some mediocre beats. I mean some of the songs are just unbearable to listen to preferably, Phone home, where he claims he's a martian!! "Mrs. Officer" is straight retarded. Lil wayne is so arrogant he feels as though he doesn't have to write lyrics anymore just make a cheesy beat with some meaningless garbage. I feel most lil wayne fans would agree with me if they listened to Tha Carter which is an incredible album. Unfortunately, Tha Carter III is the worst of the three by far, I mean his mix tapes, preferably "Tha Drought III" is by far better then this garbage. On top of all this he makes a bold claim that everybody knows by now, "The best Rapper Alive"??? Not so much so, Lil wayne, you better call your boy mannie fresh if you even dare to think about producing Tha Carter IV...yikes! But here is one suggestion, lay of the purple drank.....keep it real with yourself

1 out of 5 stars The WORST sound my ears have ever had to hear in my life   July 21, 2008

This is by far the worst...worst...worst thing to ever exist. Yes this is the worst form of entertainment i have ever witnessed in my life. This is a sad country when people get paid millions to do this horrible stuff. i mean wow. This guy basically babels lazily and effortlessly over horrible "music" (it ain't music, the fisher price sounds my kid's toys play thats better music than this, no wait, that is music and this ain't even music at all!. All he talks about is how many girls he has sex with, how many other black people in his community he's killed, and how he's getting rich off it. no intelligent person would tolerate this junk. I would sell my soul to the devil so no one would ever have to listen to this cd again. thats how much i am sickened by the wackness of this cd. pick up IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE'S "THIRD WORLD" instead...AND HE BIT OF NAS' ALBUM COVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

I LIKE THIS ALBUM. ITS TIGHT!! NO WONDER WHY IT HIT NUMBER ONE ON THE CHARTS. This album will be a classic! This album is an eclectic collection of songs that range simply brilliant to sheer genius. This album has also proved why he is the best rapper alive and to me, he is. This album sold over a million in its first week. This album will be multi-platinum.
