Donna Summer was disco's queen, but the general consensus in 1979 when the diva and her longtime producer-Svengali Giorgio Moroder came up with this seminal work was that "disco sucks." Anyway, that was the perspective in rock circles. Bad Girls, however, overcame great resistance to earn both critical and popular success. Originally released as a two-record set, Bad Girls is a concept album about--what else?--S-E-X. The album saw the dynamic duo incorporating rock influences into their disco motifs ("Hot Stuff," the title track), and, in turn, influencing dance music for years to come. The ballads, meanwhile demonstrated that Summer really could sing. The rock sound became even more pronounced on the next two LPs--The Wanderer and She Works Hard for the Money. Bad Girls, however, was Summer's first step toward artistic respectability. --Bill Holdship

A Classic! April 22, 2008
I can't believe it's been almost 30 years since this album was released. I had this album on 8-track tape back in 1979. CDs didn't exist back then. I was just a little girl. This album brings me back memories of the summer of 1979 when I was hanging out with my childhood friends and listening to this nonstop. I remember loving "Sunset People" and "Our Love" even though every song on this cd is beautiful.

Donna Summer turned out one of her greatest accomplishments with the double LP set, Bad Girls. This single CD gives us all the awesome music from that two LP set in digital form and the sound is excellent. Donna never sounded better!
The album starts with a really rocking tune, "Hot Stuff." Of course, there's practically no need for me to tell you she ain't exactly talking about material things that feel hot temperature-wise to the touch. This song is about lust, romance, one night stands and more between a man and a woman. Donna sings this to perfection and the strong beat makes this number even better! The electric guitars work well and if you haven't heard "Hot Stuff" before this one will blow you away! "Hot Stuff" has some excellent female backup vocalists, too.
The album continues with "Bad Girls." Donna sings this lusty rock ballad about women of the night and the music to go with Donna's singing really sounds great even today! Donna sings this one very well and don't be surprised if this one makes you want to jump up and dance wherever you are! In addition, another major highlight of the CD is "Dim All The Lights." "Dim All The Lights" was always my personal favorite from the two LP set; I nearly wore the grooves off this track! It rocks well with a few elements of disco and early 80's dance music that doesn't disappoint you. The beat is strong; the percussion and guitars help to make "Dim All The Lights" a magical number.
"One Night In A Lifetime" scores major points in my book as a Donna Summer classic; the beat is awesome and Donna sings this with all her heart and soul! Excellent! "Our Love" has the distinct flavor of an early 1980s dance track and Donna sings this like the pro that she is. I like the electric guitars in the musical arrangement and the key changes make "Our Love" a very good number.
"Sunset People" closes the CD with some funky sound effects and a very fast beat that is great for dancing. I really like "Sunset People;" and I think you will, too, if you like early 1980's dance music.
The liner notes come in the form of a booklet; we get the original artwork from the two LP set and the lyrics are there, too. The songs lyrics are, for some inexplicable reason, not in the same order that the songs are in on this CD; but that's a very minor disappointment.
Overall Donna Summer's Bad Girls remains a tour de force for a great artist whose awesome talent just can't be held down. If you like that dance music from the late 1970s and early 1980s you will love this album.
A Bad Girl strutting her Hot Stuff! November 7, 2007
Technically,Donna Summer had 4 LP's released in 1979,this 2 LP set followed by the 2 LP compilation ON THE RADIO VOL I & VOL II. One third of this album's material(5 of 15 tracks) was recycled for OTR(single versions appear on OTR-not counting the title track). Disco fans were strutting their stuff on discotheque floors with the title track,HOT STUFF,DIM ALL THE LIGHTS,SUNSET PEOPLE and OUR LOVE and others. After '79,Summer was dropped from the Casablanca label,and she signed with the newly christened Geffen. Anyway,pop this disc into your player and get down and funky!

It is rare when an album finds itself to claim both artistic aclaim, and commercial appeal. For Dona Summer, Bad Girls remains her singature, blockbuster album, that not only broke the chart barriers of it's time, but set the stage for the female superstars of the 80's (not that ANY of them have ever given Donna her just props).
The made for radio tracks of sides 1 & 4 took the world by storm, and Hot Stuff made belivers even from the Disco Sucks crowd. Bad Girls took some by surprise with it's very direct lyrics about the Ladies of The Night, but it became her first song to top both the Pop and R & B charts at the same time.
These 2 tracks together with side 2 opener, Dim All The Lights remain highlights of her stage shows to this day.
Side 2 & 3 focused on Donna as a singer-songwriter, and the easy Pop Songs of side 2 flowed into the beautiful ballads of side 3, There Will Always Be A You being the stunner, and side 3 closed out with her Janis Joplin tribute, My Baby Understands.
Side 4 finds us back at the Disco, with Our Love, Sunset People and Lucky. These tracks easily transport us back to 1979, yet they remain fresh and vibrant today.
Bad Girls remains the 'brass ring" in Donna's career, every artist should be as fortunate to have one.
