Amazon.com Music Reviews
This is where Miles Davis turned funk into jazz, rock into soul, and chaos into Beauty. With a rotating cast of bands featuring keyboardists Keith Jarrett and Chick Corea, guitarist John McLaughlin, percussionist Airto Moreira, saxophonists Gary Bartz and Wayne Shorter, and myriad other explorers, Davis kept up with the times...and surpassed them. He rocked harder than Sly, got funkier than J.B., and turned jazz inside out, slicing the music open till blood spilled on to the floor. More focused than Bitches Brew, which is all the more surprising since it's actually a piecemeal recording from various dates and venues--some in the studio, some on stage, but all very much l-i-v-e. --Robert Wilonsky

5 out of 5 stars Evil?, No sir!!   October 7, 2008
Live Evil??..Well, no evil at all to be found here. It's just the pure heavenly jazzthing. When do we hear the music best? When it is performed Live, and that's what is happening here! They are playing in the way the word is ment. Playing, searching, taking over the soli, feeding and being fed. On this set(it's a double-cd, so plenty of joy here!)you can also hear those loveley little things done by the under-exposed mastership of percussionist Airto.. ( ever listended to his early recordings? wow!!)
I have a lot of Miles-lp's and cd's here, so the ears are well-satisfied and I listened a lot to those recordings.. Still, for me the sessions after and around BITCHESBREW are my favorits. With this Cd I added a joy that really brings a new pulse to the love for Miles. Maybe McLaughlin has been his best Guitarman.. ( now touring with Chick Corea, hope they bring out a CD too..) Anyway, when you are a Miles-lover, then buy this one too, you will be re-surprised !! The sound is a little thick because of the live-recording ( probably on primitive tapes in that time, but this is gone within minutes because the quality of the music takes you completely!!

5 out of 5 stars IT's ALIVE!!!-Evil!!   January 10, 2008

For a more in-depth review read the other reviews on Live-Evil. Only I would suggest that one take the "Get The Cellar Door Sessions Instead" comments with a grain of salt.

I have Cellar Door, and actually listened to it BEFORE I listened to this 2 CD collection of Live Evil which contains some of the highlights of the Cellar Door sessions. By all means try out the Cellar Door Sessions, but DON'T MISS OUT ON LIVE-EVIL!

To the last reviewer who complained about John McLaughlin's playing being "sloppy", telling the audience you're a guitarist isn't good enough, dude. I mean, I listened to this and it is exactly what John McLaughlin was playing in 1970. It is some awesome stuff, I believe. The raw live version of "What I Say", that is also played various times again in different shows on the Cellar Door Sessions only withough John Mclaughlin, is worth hearing, but it is totally sublime on both Live-Evil, and on Cellar Door.

So, what do you want to do? Do you want to do? Do you want to pay minimum of $60 on Cellar Door and hear every version of every song played on those shows in Winter 1970, mostly without John McLaughlin, or do you want to buy a more reasonably-priced double cd-set of Live-Evil that contains the highlights of Cellar Door with John on guitar? Pick your poison, either one is excellent. There are some extra cuts on Live Evil that aren't on Cellar Door, though. It is interesting to hear the Keith Jarret organ along with Herbie on Piano on Selim and elsewhere.

You can hear the birth of Jazz/Rock on Live-Evil. And, if you don't like Airto then you're dismissing Miles choice to put Airto in the band. Teo did some editing, yes, but Miles was there when the editing happened. Miles put his rubber stamp on Teo's studio trickery so listen and learn.

Don't let these 3-star naysayers prevent you from purchasing an incredible, seminal version of Miles Davis in the birth of the Electric Miles era. It is highly recommended. Not too structured, though, very organic--just right.

3 out of 5 stars Too Bad   July 25, 2007

It's too bad that this otherwise remarkable music is marred by vocals from the drummer, which ultimately make certain tracks unlistenable, in my opinion. Otherwise it would easily be 5 stars. By the way, at this time, Amazon has the wrong album cover. This is not Live at the Filmore, Amazon.
Too bad, because Live Evil has great cover art.

5 out of 5 stars un viaje   July 6, 2007

4 out of 5 stars ..and why not five?   February 2, 2007

ratings are silly..but although i enjoyed live-evil when i bought it a couple years ago, having recently recieved the cellar door sessions i have to say it is far superior and really makes you question the editing work.

the cellar door box is expensive, if you can afford it its a better choice and i really think its worth the money but if you can't ...you could do far worse things than listen to live-evil.
