| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com The tragic events of 9/11 produced their share of unexpected heroes, few more unlikely than Daniel Rodriguez, the NYPD's "singing cop." The Puerto Rican-American tenor's by now familiar rendition of "God Bless America" won over the hearts of his city, then nation--but took shots from a few cynical critics, too. Rodriguez emerged from the experience with career mentoring from no less than Placido Domingo, and this sophomore release gratifyingly proves that Rodriguez was no marketing fluke. Tellingly, the musician bookends this collection with personal tributes to the singer he obviously hopes to pattern his career after, Mario Lanza, including the unabashed romantic bluster of "Be My Love," the song Rodriguez proposed to his wife with. The singer and producer Tom Scott chart a course through a slate of familiar modern ballads and Broadway standards both old (Carousel's "If I Loved You") and new ("Only Love" and "She Was There" from The Scarlet Pimpernel). But the album's most intriguing selections are a pair of Spanish language love songs ("Jurame," "Solamente Una Vez"), recordings whose warm, sumptuous flavor seems to hint at even brighter horizons for the sturdy tenor and improbable modern American hero. --Jerry McCulley

Rodriguez, the Best ! November 11, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Daniel Rodriguez is one of my favorite vocalists. This CD has a mixture of songs, including very beautiful duets. It is good listening for home and driving. Exceptional, as are his other works.
Fine voice, but everything else needs improvement May 1, 2006 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
I'll admit, I bought this CD because Kristin Chenowth appears on it (she sounds fabulous, by the way!). Turns out Daniel Rodriguez is a decent singer.
However, one listen to this CD is probably all it will ever get from me. For starters, the choice of songs is horrendous. It was as if a bunch of people got together and voted on the sappiest, most overblown, most tired songs ever written, and these were the top choices.
On top of that, the arrangements are completely unimaginative. Several of these songs could have been saved by interesting arrangements, but apparently "boring" was the theme the arranger was seeking.
My biggest complaint, however, is about the production. So much reverb has been added to Daniel's vocal as to almost obscure it. Usually reverb like that is only used to cover up serious flaws in the performance, which doesn't seem to be the case here -- the vocals themselves seem fine. That would indicate to me that it was justa a terrible choice made by the producer. Adding to the production problems is the poor use of the stereo sound field in regard to the orchestra: a full orchestra can be used to create a rich and wide sound field quite easily, but the producer has chosen to mix most of the orchestra toward the center of the sound field, both burying it beneath the vocals and leaving the overall recording sounding like something more appropriate for AM radio than for the high-fidelity sound systems that have been in existence for, oh, the past 50 years.
I'm sure there is an audience for this sort of thing, but the flaws in the production and material make it something I cannot recommend. Mr. Rodriguez would be well advised to bring on a new production team for future projects, because I think he really does have the talent to make a career out of his singing.

I can't remember when I last bought a CD I've enjoyed as much. Received it yesterday, started playing it this morning and just keep listening to it. His voice gives me chills, the song selections are wonderful, I especially like "Completely" which I had never heard before, great lyrics, perfect rendition. Just came back to Amazon to order his "Spirit of America", know his voice singing these songs will probably bring me to tears, but that's OK! Buy it, you won't regret it!

Daniel's singing is wonderful on this CD. I gave everyone I know copies. His incredible looks and his voice are magnificently nostalgic and yet he brings a freshness to opera. He has this Caruso like charm and his voice comes so close to Caruso's yet, Daniel sounds like Daniel. I think this man can play Caruso if given half a chance. Everything about Daniel is classic. I've seen him perform live and his voice and presentation are great. We saw him sing on Valentine's Day this year and he brought down the house that night. I cannot wait to hear his next release!
