Amazon.com The songs collected on And I Feel Fine... The Best of The I.R.S. Years 1982-1987 are just good enough to render the previous I.R.S. years collection, 1998's Eponymous, officially dead. The latter was likely the way the masses heard R.E.M.'s underground hits on CD the first time--after all, the band had just come off of their apocalyptic breakthrough single ("It's the end of the world...") and CD players were finally hitting below the $400 mark. It did the trick. We all got up to date and it paved the way for a more sonic R.E.M. to grow into the phenomena they've become. This new version is a welcome history re-write as it pulls more from Murmur and Reckoning days and does a far better job at telling the early story--owing a great deal to the photos and in-depth notes from Anthony DeCurtis. For our money it's worth $2 to buy the "Collectors Edition" for the massive collection of rarities on disc 2. The DVD companion to this CD is a visual goldmine. --Peter Hilgendorf

Try the I.R.S import "The Best of R.E.M." December 1, 2008 I noticed all the complaints on sound. So my 5-star rating is really for an import, "The Best of R.E.M." With 16 songs the songlist is representative of R.E.M.'s early years, though there are no rarities on it. It starts with "Chronic Town," then proceeds with 3 songs from each album chronologically from "Murmur" through "Document." The sound quality is fine, although a little lower than most newer CDs, so you have to turn it up a little. Here's the excellent song selection:

Best of the Best October 31, 2008 This is an amazing collection. The best cuts from the best of thier albums.
It's the End of the World As We Know It... And This Sounds Fine! March 2, 2008 I haven't heard all of R.E.M's material, but I was quite satisfied with this collection, especially when joined with the the '88-'03 years.
Non-stop greatness !!! December 28, 2007 In their early days at IRS, before R.E.M. became one of the "untoucheables" like U2 - they were just a group that was largely unknown outside of angst-ridden college radio. It was also in my opinion, one of their more prolific periods - putting out gems such as "Radio Free Europe" and "Gardening at Night" that were hardly typical radio fare at the time. They were a group that put out music that felt right to them, not just hits that'd make Casey Kasem's Top 10 ( ironically - some of their stuff ended up their despite how non-typical their stuff was ).
Once they left IRS - they did end up being more popular, some even accused them of selling out to make a couple of bucks - but these 21 pieces of work on this album - are each a masterpiece in it's own way. If you're a fan, you probably have most of the stuff on this compilation already - but the addition of a special 2nd disk - with live stuff, outtakes & alternate cuts - make this a must-have for anybody.
The record business is killing itself December 27, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The IRS REM albums were some of the best released... and best sounding... of the 80's. This strips all of this and is shameful. Too much loudness compression, making it impossible and difficult to listen to. Technology is getting better all the time... yet the music industry is releasing albums as if we were all listening to cheap Chevy pick-up truck stereos. THIS IS TO BE AVOIDED. SHAMEFUL.
