Trying Something New September 12, 2008 I was intrigued by the use of a violin instead of a guitar, but the effect isn't as enchanting as I expected. It is different, but I was looking for something edgier.
good but not great July 4, 2008 Lily's got an o.k. singing voice and is alright as a lyricist, but the standout tracks are the instrumentals, especialy her cover of "maggot brain".i don't see myself listening to this album repeatedly, but if it pops up on shuffle i'll let it go.i guess it's just a tad too commercial for my taste.
Captivating & Powerful July 3, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This record is absolutely gorgeous. The use of the violin is so unique and beautiful, as are the vocals. Resonates sensitivity, joy, heartbreak, and power - musically and lyrically. Such a refreshing contrast to the sterility of what we so often hear in the mainstream. Lili Haydn is remarkable, other-worldly onstage... should not be missed! I am typically not loose with my superlatives, but I just can't say enough about this artist. Her work should not only be on everyone's playlist, but should jump straight to the top. Enjoy!
Far-reaching mix of alt-pop, world music and space-rock June 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the third album by singer-violinist Lili Haydn, who merges alt-pop and space rock with traces of world music and folk. Fans of all those old, classic Kate Bush albums will want to check this gal out; folks who like Peter Gabriel's latter-day explorations of global beat music, too. Haydn has a wide, dynamic range, with softer, more conventionally melodic songs like "Memory One" balanced by cosmic, proggy difficult listening, ala "Atom Heart Mother" (on "Powers Of Five," which closes the album...) Haydn's work won't be for everyone, but for the right audience, this album and others will be a long-lasting treat. (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Music Guide)
On a whim June 12, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I believe I caught a review of Lili in the Wallstreet Journal and thought I'd try her latest CD. Her music is an acquired taste and probably better after a good bottle of wine.
