5 out of 5 stars I love this CD!   November 23, 2008
I have to admit, I was never a big Journey fan back in the day. I didn't dislike them, I was just into different music at the time. Recently after reading about the new Journey front man and the Steve versus Arnel controversy, I found myself intrigued and picked up Journey's Greatest Hits. I was stunned! I knew the words to every song as though I had absorbed the music subliminally. I began to realize that truly, Journey provided the soundtrack of the 80's. I now wanted more. So I picked up this little gem. What I like about it is that it's not the Journey of the 80's. Don't get me wrong, that music was great but been there done that. To stay creatively fresh an artist needs to keep moving forward. I don't think it would've served Journey well to just keep cranking out the same stuff they did in 83'. Trial By Fire's a more mature work. No, Steve Perry probably couldn't hit the high notes anymore, but so what? What he may have lacked in the upper register is more than made up for by the husky soulfulness of his voice and impeccable phrasing. While I like SP's FLOSM, I think he was at his best when working with Jonathan & Neal. I love this CD!

5 out of 5 stars hhhhhhello Mr. Moon   November 18, 2008
Whoever you are, buy this album, open it; don't look at the cover, just open it, put it in your cd player and skip all of the first three songs, then play the entire album without stopping. This beautiful piece of work is a shining example of what extreme talent can accomplish when channeled in a creatively free environment.
The first three songs are chaff meant to impress the dieing classic rock stations of the mid to late 90's. Toss these out and this album is more than timeless, it is heartwarming and emotionally stimulating after a hundred plays over a hundred years.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a great one.   October 10, 2008
I totally disagree with most of the reviews of this album here as I think it is one of the best melodic rock albums released the last fifteen years or so.It is truly a treat for the heart and soul packed with good songs, delicate arrangements with a stellar production. It has come to be one of my "desert island discs" and I truly love it.
Maybe it has something to do with being a musician and songwriter myself who knows but if you like Journey you'll enjoy this album as well as the others.Too bad the Steve Perry-era ended with this one.

I haven't pulled this one out for 5 years or so. I'm sorry that I did. I was making my best of Journey CD (post Perry not included) and searched Trial by Fire for a gem or 2. I can honestly say this CD sorely sucks. I'm almost sure these are out-takes from the last few CD's in the 80's. How many balads are there on this thing? Take a look at the picture of the band on the jacket. Was Perry cut and pasted in? He looks like he'd rather be taking a crap. I love this band but this album was a mistake.

5 out of 5 stars Trial by Fans   June 18, 2008

I've never reviewed this and thought now would be the appropriate time since the band just released their new album, 'Revelation' with their new lead singer. Amid the many varied reviews on this album, I've always been a fan of this one and consider it very under rated. I was never really sure what the fans were looking for here. After 'Raised on Radio' which was pretty much a Steve Perry solo project, I felt this album was a true comeback for that trademark Journey sound. Others will disagree with me here. To put it at their worst along with 'Raised on Radio' as one reviewer commented I think is mistaken. 'Raised on Radio' would have to be Journey's most polished studio album and that is what made that album unique, Maybe not very memorable, but still not their worst. I would much rather see 'Evolution' as one of their worst following the huge 'Infinity' album which to this day still remains one of their strongest selling albums. For 'Trial by Fire' all the typical Journey elements are present here, the rockers, the mid-tempo's and the ballads. For me, I always love the rock so I'm more apt to favor that side of Journey because they do it well and on this album they kill it. 'One More' and 'Castles Burning' are prime examples where they went outside a little bit of their comfort zone to deliver these. 'When You Love a Woman' earned them a Grammy so Cain delivered there. The closing track 'Trial by Fire' is just an awesome track with Schon on guitar showing you what his work is like on his solo efforts like 'Beyond the Thunder'. I just don't get the negative about this album at all especially if you're comparing it to albums like 'Evolution'. For me, this is a great album from Journey and it's a shame that the band and Perry had their falling out because it would been cool to see where they went next.
