Editorial Reviews:

Album Description
The Cardinals--Ryan Adams (vocals, guitar, keys), Neal Casal (guitar, vocals), Chris Feinstein (bass, vocals), Jon Graboff (pedal steel, vocals) and Brad Pemberton (drums)--have confirmed an October 28 release for Cardinology, the band's latest collection of all-new studio material for the Lost Highway label.

Album Description
Although the album's title may lead you to believe that this is a compilation, Cardinology is, in fact, a new album! Like its predecessor Easy Tiger, which TIME magazine hailed as "a career breakthrough," Cardinology is a concise and focused collection of twelve unadorned gems. The Cardinals are: Ryan Adams (vocals, guitar, keys), Neal Casal (guitar, vocals), Chris Feinstein (bass, vocals), Jon Graboff (pedal steel, vocals) and Brad Pemberton (drums).

2 out of 5 stars No magic here, but a workmanlike effort....   December 2, 2008
I've followed Ryan's arc for quite some time and this one doesn't
quite do it for me. I love Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights as well as the Whiskeytown era and most of his work in between.

Easy Tiger was a bit of a different direction but quite solid.
It didn't work immediately for me but after some listening I really
grew to like it. Cardinology just seems to lack the spark, passion and energy that is Ryan Adams.

4 out of 5 stars Cardinology   November 29, 2008
Classic Ryan Adams. Amazing he can keep putting out fresh material year to year.

3 out of 5 stars Man I hate doing this...   November 26, 2008
....I am such a HUGE fan of Ryan Adams, but I just can't get into this disc. Granted, I've only listened to it a couple of times, but there is just something lacking - passion? Is it over-produced? I can't quite put my finger on it. If you're just being introduced to Ryan Adams, I would definitely start off with one of his earlier works (Cold Roses is particularly good), or any of his Whiskeytown discs are worth an introductory listen.

I'm hoping this disc grows on me. If it doesn't, that doesn't mean that my status as a huge fan will change.

Also, for those of you that haven't seen him live - that is something not to be missed. Saw him in Seattle last year and was completely blown away.

3 out of 5 stars Ryan Adams Review   November 26, 2008
Newest release from Ryan Adams is a solid effort of what you might expect from him since he has been working with The Cardinals. However, those who are fans of his earlier solo work, and original band Whiskeytown may be disapointed. This latest work lacks the diversity and cutting edge of his earlier work. The newest cd is filled with solid songs, none of which are bad, but also none of which stand out as memoriable as some of his best work.

3 out of 5 stars Is this the real Ryan Adams once and for all?   November 24, 2008
Ryan Adams has gone through so many musical diversions, if not transformations, since he left Whiskeytown and started his solo career with 2000's outstanding "Heartbreaker" album that it has made me wonder who the real Ryan Adams is. After years of drugs and alcohol abuse, Adams re-emerged last year (sobered up) with "Easy Tiger", which was billed to "Ryan Adams and the Cardinals", as is this album. The "Easy Tiger" album came after a dizzying 2005, in which Ryan released not one, not two, but three albums, of varying quality.

"Cardinology" (12 tracks; 40 min.) follows the pattern of "Easy Tiger", with a mix of Americana/alterna-country/rock songs. "Born Into a Light" starts off the album with a blast, and is one of the best tracks on here. "Magick" is one of the harder rock rocks. "Cobwebs" is a more romantic tune. Other highlights include "Natural Ghost", "Evergreen" and the closer "Stop". At 40 min., this album clips by in no time.

In all, this is a pleasant album, for sure, as was "Easy Tiger". But am I the only who thinks that, while pleasant, this album lacks, like "Easy Tiger", truly memorable songs? I have played this album numerous times in the last month or so, and yet, I couldn't hum a single song once I turned off the CD player. Compare that to, say, "Heartbreaker" and "Gold", which contained tons of memorable, even unforgettable tunes. So this may be the new, sober, in-a-band, settled Ryan Adams, but for my money I'd like to get the Ryan Adams back from the 2000-01 era.
