Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com essential recording
Alice in Chains were initially tagged with the "grunge" moniker, when in fact their haunting, ponderous sound was far closer to the progressive rock of Queensryche. Their second album, Dirt, is a moody, portentous affair, filled with occasionally inspired riffing from guitarist Jerry Cantrell and hair-tossed wailing from singer Layne Staley. Perhaps the band got lumped in with Generation X because their lyrics focused upon depression, death, and drugs. Certainly, titles such as "Down in a Hole," "Junkhead," and "Hate to Feel" didn't leave much room for doubt as to Cantrell's perspective. The quartet did have a slightly lighter, almost poppy side to them, though, as "God Smack" and "Hate to Feel" indicate. Ultimately, Dirt is classic angst rock. --Everett True

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest albums   November 13, 2008
This album from Alice in Chains is amongst their best along with their strong debut album and ranks amongst the top cd's of the alternative rock era.highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Yawn! Give me real grunge like Staind any day of the week.   November 9, 2008

So I decided to listen to this album because I heard it was an amazing grunge album. Man! I was so disappointed. It was simply awful. Not one good song on it. All of the songs sound EXACTLY the same- seriously, folks. The guitar riffs are unimaginative and uninspired and that Lane Stailey guy is a horrible singer. He sounds like a whining puppy or something! Listen to real grunge like Staind or Daughtry. Alice In Chains are lame post-grunge.

5 out of 5 stars Scrapes the sky   October 14, 2008
From the beginning of "Them Bones" where Staley screams out over a pounding riff it is clear to see why this is a classic. Then the chorus comes and the melody works perfectly against the guitar work, and I end up wishing the band was still around.

"Dam That River" shows why they were the most metal of the Seattle bands, but the next classic is "Down In A Hole", again sinking down into the dirt until it turns quicksand and starts to float. If you haven't heard "Rooster" the song is epic. Some songs afterward are alright, "Iron Man" is nothing great, but it is clear why Godsmack would name themselves after the song with the same name.

The other two best tracks are "Angry Chair" and "Would". "Angry Chair" agains sinks even further down in the dirt than "Down In A Hole", while "Would" is easily the best song on here, especially the very end.

This album is not a happy one, instead it is infused with depression, frustration, and self disgust. But it transcends in a way that Bush (Who I used to like) or Seven Mary Three never did. Instead this album is on the same level of early 90s greatness as Nevermind and Superunknown.

5 out of 5 stars AIC at it's best!   September 8, 2008
Amazing album!
AIC was so under rated in their prime. Their sound is unique and amazing..
This album rocks!

5 out of 5 stars Nothing compares.   September 4, 2008
My musical tastes have changed over the years quite a bit, but Alice in Chains has always, and always will be, my favorite band. Every one of their releases are 5 star worthy, but this one is usually regarded as their best, and I would agree. Simply because EVER single song is great, there is no filler. There is a reason AIC still gets air time on the radio all over the nation, and if you like them even a little bit and don't have this cd, you need to get it now!
