| Editorial Reviews:
Amazon.com essential recording With valuable assistance from producer Rick Rubin, the Peppers find just the right blend of punk, funk, and hip-hop. Even with a running time of 74 minutes, this 1991 breakthrough has continuity and cohesion both within and across the 17 cuts. Riding Flea's surging bass, Anthony Kiedis delivers his explicit lyrics with a rapper's flair, extolling the virtues (and outlining the dangers) of sex and drugs. Plaintive ballads such as "Breaking the Girl," "I Could Have Lied," and the hit "Under the Bridge" give the album depth and provide contrast to the raw energy of "Mellowship Slinky in B Major," "Funky Monks," and "Give It Away." Rubin masterfully fuses John Frusciante's raunchy guitar with the irresistible grooves. --Marc Greilsamer

ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY September 17, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Memo to 3,000 FM rock stations............1991 Please play a band called the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Their songs, "Under the Bridge" and "Give it Away" should be continually played till you have brainwashed the unwashed masses into believing this is a cool new band. Do not refer to any of their earlier LP's or that they came from alternative music scene. The band have been around a number of years and it is to your benefit to avoid mentioning their history as we had no intention of supporting them during their early years. Refer to the band in a familiar way, i.e "The Chili Peppers," and become sponsors of any up coming tours. Their music is a little rock, a little funk some rap and they do ballads as well. Their stuff is as bland as 70's wallpaper and inoffensive, and yet we can still market them easily as bad boy rockers. Recent discussions with the "Chili Peppers" management indicate a long term desire of the band to make lame Cd's, as unoriginal as possible for years to come. Their manager described the bands attitude as follows. "Like a transsexual not knowing if he wants to stand up or sit down to piss, the Chili Peppers will keep making CD's neither just rock, nor funk, or rap and yet the money and image will be the deciding factors."
This album "Give(s) to me sweet, sacred bliss!" July 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I know a lot about this album has already been said but I'll go ahead and say that I agree when people say that this is one of the best '90s rock albums, and one of the best rock albums of all time. Every song on "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" is amazing, with lots of great musicianship, singing and songwriting. There's so much energy, funk and fun, this album is always great with every listen. From the amazing basslines of the legendary Flea to the in-the-pocket drumming of Chad Smith, the crooning vocals alongside the sometimes profound but in this case quite often naughty lyrics by the amazing Anthony Keidis and funky lead guitar lines of the awesome John Frusciante. Plus, Blood Sugar Sex Magik contains 17 songs at over 70 minutes, so that'll definitely keep you busy for a while! Basically, this album is an all-time classic and is just about the greatest album ever made by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. If you wanna get some of the best RHCP around, get this and "Californication" for starters, and definitely check out the rest of their catalogue. Thanks for the time, and peace.
Incredible June 16, 2008 I was a bit apprehensive purchasing this album, thinking that funk music just wouldn't be my thing. But the beats are plain awesome thanks to some really great bass from Flea backed up by Chad's drums. Frusciante contributes absolutely incredible guitar playing along side Kiedis leading with spot-on vocals and lyrics as always. This is fun and easy listening at its best. Virtually perfect.
Peppers Classic May 26, 2008 BUY IT!!! A must have for any music lover. Every track is excellent! The overall 5 star rating speaks for itself.
The best Album RHCP ever made May 4, 2008 This Album is so creative and funny. The was when they were red hot. I really enjoy this album. Listen and read the words, you will get hooked...
