Great album: October 28, 2005 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great album and an evolutionary one for JCS. I can listen to this album repeatedly the entire way through.
All these nobodies saying the music isn't good anymore and they sold ou. There is a Lagwagon song and one of the lyrics says it all for these people. "The bands are good 'til they make enough cash to eat food and get a pad. Then they're sold out and their music is cliche Because talent's exclusive to bands without pay."
Makes me look on the past with a bit of shame. July 19, 2005 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
While browsing the bargain bin a few weeks ago, I came across this album, which I hadn't listened to since it was stolen (along with the rest of my somewhat sad collection) a few years earlier. I did a quick recollection of how much I had enjoyed the album in the past, so I gave it a shot.
After a full listen-through, I was surprised to find that my opinion about the album hadn't changed all that much. My musical taste has matured somewhat over the time period since I last listened to it, but, I found it interesting that I still felt the same way.
Spiraling, Lazy Boy Dash, Do Right, and String O' Pearls are by far the strongest tracks on the CD, as they exercise what, in my opinion, JCS does best: entertain us with slightly poppy, yet mysteriously intriguing instrumentals, all driven by Jimmy Haha's gravely tenor.
After that, the CD really goes down the drain. The instrumentals lose creativity and just, well, drone. Face It reminds me of Spiraling with a weaker chorus and poor vocal/instrumental harmonies. Let's Get Flat and Ooh have depressing lyrics in the sense that they're just nonsensical, which leaves you with a bad feeling about the rest of the album.
If you can find it for an inexpensive price like myself, I'd recommend picking up for the first four tracks alone; maybe you'll find something in the latter half of the CD that I missed, too.
Great CD - really. March 27, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I can only name about 3 CDs that I am able to listen to the entire way through - and Bring Your Own Stereo (BYOS) is definately one of them. This band might seem silly, or weird, or boring, or stoner-ish, but when you listen to this CD, you can tell they're so much more. Frankly, I love this CD!I listen to everything from jazz to classical to Coldplay and Fiona Apple. But in the end, this CD is in my player more than any of those. There's just something about this CD... I'm not even sure I can describe it. It puts my feelings and thoughts to words and music. At the same time, it's creative and original (especially the lyrics). BYOS is a great release of emotion and energy; cranking it up all the way and singing the lyrics as loud as I can is some sort of weird therapy. I think it's strange that I like Jimmie's Chicken Shack, but I do. Give them a chance. You probably will, too.
Amazing and Surprising May 29, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When you think of Jimmie's Chicken Shack, you probably would think of fun goofy songs that are catchy. But, their music on this cd is so much more than that. Of course they have 5-6 fun, catchy songs that are really good. But, what really stands out in my opinion are the amazingly emotional acoustic songs. I am not a big fan of slow acoustic music, but these songs are phenomenal. There is so much meaning and depth to this album, and it is surprising that they come from a band with such a goofy name. Its just too bad they havent released any new albums recently.
So Underrated May 8, 2003 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Too bad nobody has heard of these guys, they're so good. There versatility impresses me. First, they have the fun, goodtimes songs like "LAzy Boy Dash," "Do Right," "Trash.." And then they have some cool heavy songs like #9 (Forgot what its called). But alongside this, they have amazingly emotional and well written acoustic songs like the last three songs on the cd. I am usually not a fan of this acoustic stuff, but i actually love their acoustic songs. JCS is an awesome band, i saw them play live with 311 a few years ago, and they were definitely good times. Buy this cd, you'll love it.
