1st of a long line of excellent efforts October 19, 2008 This is the only record I did not own by KX. I started with Gretchen like many others. Don't miss out on this. You have heard some of these on later albums but some are pure classic early KX. A must have! Especially for fans. For those of you who have not heard KX, you are in for a treat. They are talented, unique and as I have always said...the world's best (relatively) unknown rock band. They never got the stardom they richly deserve. But I guess that makes them even more special...!
What's with all the hype? March 5, 2008 As much as I LOVE King's-X, this album is certainly not worthy of all of the gushing praise lavished upon it.
For sure the listener can hear the beginnings of the great music that Gretchen, FHL, and later efforts represent. But I really think that people are reflecting on Silent Planet with a bit too much nostalgia.
Music with meaning and soul! September 6, 2007 All I really to say about this band is if you love sweet sounding melodies and harmonies with a dash of grit these guys are the band for you.
The tunes are very well put together and the over all experience is awesome. The first 4 to 5 cd's are most haves and the others are good as well, however this is when they were really at their peak.
Check them out!
The emergence of greatness! Say hello to KING'S X!!!! May 10, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was the debut album for Doug Pinnick, Ty Tabor and Jerry Gaskill, henceforth known as King's X. They would acquire a cult like following from this albums release that stands still today. The truly great thing about this album is the fact that, when hair bands were spewing the same old crap that people seemed to eat up because it was always on the radio, these guys took it upon themselves to create a new version of the genre. Out of the Silent Planet is a rock/funk/jazz and blues without the horns fusion that broke new ground. I would compare it to the genius of Steely Dan in the 70's, when they took the classic rock sound and added jazz/blues/soul to create their own sound. Harmonies on vocals are the earmark of King's X. These guys were born to sing together. Jerry (drummer) and Ty (guitar) have the perfect voices to blend in as backup to Doug's (bass) soulful, low key bluesy sound. The standouts on the album are: "In The New Age" which has one of the coolest bass lines I have ever heard, "Goldilox" which is a love song of sorts, "King" which was an early sign of their ability to play on words brilliantly, "Shot Of Love" which uses harmony like only the Beatles could do before. Remaining songs on the album are strong at least. This is a stand-up, take no prisoners, this is who we are, welcome to King's X album and they don't apologize. Thankfully, they didn't quit. Almost 20 years later, they are still going strong. A great intro album and a must have.
forgot how good this album is March 26, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Funny to listen to this again after so many years. Lotsa great tracks and the songs just get better and better the more you listen. You can really hear the influence Kings X must have had on Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, etc. "In the New Age" alone has elements borrowed by each if those bands. "Far, Far Away" has some of the best vocals dUg has ever done and the key change coming out of the bridge is just sick. "Shot of Love" hasn't aged well though, sounds pretty geigh, but is the only blemish on a great record that started the whole "D" tuning craze.
