Editorial Reviews:

An intelligent blend of melodic and heavy rock, Gretchen Goes to Nebraska is arguably King's X's finest album. It's more exciting than the followup Faith Hope Love, with the heavy opener "Out of the Silent Planet" (C.S. Lewis fans take note), and the hard rock "Fall On Me" and "Over My Head" (a single from the album). There are ballads as well, such as the beautiful "Summerland." The inclusion of the organ, the sitar, and the dulcimer in the arsenal of instruments adds a nice touch. Heavy metal fans may grow impatient with this one, but fans of melody-oriented progressive rock will definitely want to check it out. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars Superb   August 6, 2008
Let's get one thing straight. There is no equal to this band in rock and this cd proves it.The riff in Fall On Me,2:34 in,says it all.Ive seen them live six times and left each show completely amazed. It's not just the obvious technical ability of Ty,Dug and Jerry, but the incredible compositional skills and above all TASTE.These guys know the space between the notes is just as important as the notes themselves.Thank you Kings X.There is no equal.

5 out of 5 stars Oh Yeah!!!   July 9, 2008
This is a completely brilliant effort. A must have for any music lover. Guitar sounds like it's 12 feet tall. Vocal harmonies smell like the Beatles and the song writing is rock solid. Maybe the best three piece band you've ever heard. BUY IT NOW

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent!   June 29, 2008
I have been familiar with this album for years, and it has not tarnished over that time. In addition to other responsibilities, I am also a musician and sound engineer. I say this because GRETCHEN GOES TO NEBRASKA is phenomenal on both counts--great composition and crisp technical production. This album is lyrically inspired and musically beautiful. A bit less heavy than their follow-up, FAITH HOPE LOVE, it is (and I would normally be embarrassed to admit this) home to some of the most absolutely brilliant ballads (the way ballads are supposed to sound). Just listen to 'Pleiades', 'Summerland', and 'Difference' to get a sense of the magic. But this album also delivers the band's trademark punches on all the other tracks. In short, it is a dynamic album, but covers all ground very respectably. And not to worry, nothing is overdone--the vocal harmonies are pleasant and Tabor's guitar arpeggios are flawlessly presented. This is a perennial powerhouse of an album!

5 out of 5 stars Best Rock album of 80's?   June 10, 2008
For some reason it took me a while to get into King's X, but they are a phenomenal band. This album is clearly their best. Every song is great. LEGENDARY guitar tone thanks to the Lab Series L5. How they aren't more popular is beyond me. I really like how they contrast rich harmony with Ty Tabor's guitar solos that are played over nothing but bass and drums. Sounds great.

5 out of 5 stars Their best....   March 13, 2008
I have been a huge fan of King's X since the late 80s and this is still the CD that truly defines the talent of this phenomenal band. I have everything they have ever produced and this is truly the pinnacle. All albums/CDs should be in your collection but his one is the best. Being such a huge fan it has been a bit difficult to witness the gradual decline since this release. Their next CD "King's X" (1992) will rock you to your core but does not match "Gretchen"....."Dogman"(1993) will also make you take note of how incredible these guys are..."Ear Candy" is their most sophisticated effort and one of my all-time favorite CDs, but after that they sort of morphed. They began to lose me a bit. I still have all CDs at hand, ready for the player but nothing has grabbed me for the last decade or so. Don't let me unduly sway you...these guys are good, but if you haven't had the chance to hear them via CD get the first 5 CDs ("Faith, Hope, Love" has issues but still rocks), see if you love the sound and then delve into their latest works. They got decent reviews for the latest "Ogre Tones" but not from me...and I am one of the biggest fans since Day 1. Get "Gretchen" and get "rockin"...turn it up loud and tell the neighbors to go on vacation.....
