A brilliant thematic album...perfect!!! September 26, 2008 This is absolutely one of the best albums I have ever heard. It is truly a work of art. Magnificent demonstration of musical talent and superb skills. Every aspect of this album is perfect.
Entertaining! July 5, 2008 This is a very nice CD. Everyone has their own opinion and like to catagorize but me...I love all types of music. And I love to listen to all genres. True Flamingo...no..but this is very good music. When I'm riding I will put it on and Mannnnnnnn...what a RIDE!
What's all the fuss about reviewers? June 26, 2008 Previous reviewers are totally right, this album is NOT flamenco and I for one find it all the more interesting and enjoyable on account of this.
Stevens playing on this album is at times frightening and at the very least engaging. From the stomping title track opener to the progressive style of 'Dementia' this album sets a seen of contemporary Spanish guitar based compositions enhanced by modern grooves, samples and sound effects that certainly bare little remblance to the traditional flamenco form. Stevens heritage is rock music and his electric playing is among the most highly rated on the planet. With Flamenco A Go-Go he never aims to compete with the flamenco masters so why critisece the music because he chose to use the "F" word in the albums title. The music for the most part is of outstounding quality and compositional arrangement. I am flawaed every time I here the title tracks constantly evolving progressions. Many of the tracks are sonically dramatic, melodically infections and the improvisations show a fast and fluent technique few in the Nuevo Flamenco genre could aspire to and for that I find this Stevens project his most refreshing of all his work to date.
Flamenco A Go-Go is an unashamedly ground breaking album that I feel sure will last the test of time and along with Al Marconi's "Terra Nova" must rate as one of the most interesting and engaging albums the genre has ever produced.
Fantastic Music Extravaganza February 24, 2007 Flamenco a go-go is an extraordinary musical journey, so deep and emotional that really surprised me. I was a little skeptical about this release even if I always liked a lot of things Steve did in the past and I have always admired his talent and musicality sincerely. But this title, this word, "flamenco" left me with some doubts (even if I like a lot of spanish stuff from Paco De Lucia, John McLaughlin etc). I did buy this one almost for collection reasons but when I listened it for the first time, it really blew my mind! The incredible sonic magma Steve presents here is something really unique and of the highest musical value. I mean, it's art, can't say more than this. It's not something made for commercial reasons but it's a labour of love. Pure love, pure art without compromises. Some of you maybe could think at this work as some sort of elevator music due to the ingredients of this awkward release, classical guitar, synth, loops, flamenco influences and an "old fashioned" hair metal guitar hero ... Nothing more wrong my friends! What we have here is a fantastic musician, really creative and corageous but even a greater artist and songwriter. The music is really creative you have to go deep in it for yourself to believe. Sure there are some flamenco's characteristics here and there, but this music is something totally unique and totally Steve Stevens in the end because his musical personality, even the same you maybe appreciated in Atomic Playboys or in the Billy Idol's works (like I did), is here in every single bit of music. There are amazing musical twists and turns, melodic lines, guitar chops and new, totally unpredictable arrangements here fused into something new and unique. It is right like another guy said in another review, there are some James Bond quotations here and there, really funny and clever. I told you, it's something different, a record that every music lover should own .. I want to add just this. Steve's musicality is not something you meet very often. It is something precious, his melodic ideas, his music concepts are brilliant and precious, believe me, I'm a musician. The use of colours in music is something Steve has mastered, some tunes are exotic, some evocative, some aggressive, some tender and dreamy. Each tune is unique, I particularly love "Cinecitta" and "Riviera 68", or "Our man in Istanbul" but I don't want to point out one song, because every tune here is meticolously tailor made to project an array of emotions and has tons of things to admire from a musical and artistic point of view. Discover them for yourself! The only song that I find Steve could do better is the opener. I don't like the arrangement ... too much Gypsy Kings for me! But apart from that ... a perfect album. I know that probably this one is not for everyone. People generally tend to like a music genre and to go only for that. If this is your case, this is not your album. This album is for those who have no prejudice, those who want to put the cd in the reader, close the lights and be taken on a musical journey they never took and that they will never forget. I would sugggest this one to my best friends.
In the end one thing about the cd. Mine is the enhanced version (I don't know if there's another one without the extra materials but anyway ...). You can find the video footage for the tune Dementia which is in the cd. It is a live version recorded on tour. Really nice! Then you will find a Steve's short bio and essentially nothing more. And one thing more. This album is recorded very very well. Actually I didn't have the chance to listen it in my hi end system but I will do ASAP and I'll write something about the recording qualities of this album that I feel they are a lot. ENJOY!!
Steve Stevens acoustic - almost... January 17, 2007 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
Granted, not everyone is a Steve Stevens fan. If you're not a fan, there may be a track or two here that would entice you - especially if you are into Flamenco guitar or just like instrumentals.
If you are a Steve Stevens fan, then this CD is probably a must have but likely not a frequent listen. Like for the non-fans, there are definitely tracks here that'll find their way onto your iPod and work well in a shuffle.
Personally, I listen to alot of instrumental music - especially guitar work. This is the first solo Stevens CD I've purchased. I started with Bozzio/Steven/Levins "Situation Dangerous" (Five+ stars there). I keep in in iTunes on a shuffle while I write.
I'm a PhD student. I spend alot of time writing and have to drown out the rest of the world. For that purpose, this CD works well. The mix is space-filling and drowns out even the most rowdy grad lounges or coffee shops. It'd probably be good to run to as well - if I ever put my running shoes on again...
