King's X's Ogre Tones is nothing less than a grand slam. Loaded with the trio's trademark vocal harmonies, Doug Pinnick's patented bass burps, Ty Tabor's signature guitar stylings and Jerry Gaskill's unmistakable rhythmic skills behind the drum kit, this 14-song celebration is both accessible and heavy, somber and inspiring. The band has long been compared to The Beatles and herein lies the proof. The Beatles comparisons are more than simply the ethereal vocals. They're also about Pinnick and Co.'s ability to craft memorable songs, whether the opening stomp "Alone," the rifftastic "Fly," the uplifting rocker "If," or the gorgeous acoustic track "Honesty," which stands as a new career high. Lyrically, the group grapples with issues ranging from death to aging to global unrest with humor and warmth, injecting each song with the perfect balance of levity and curiosity. From beginning to end the Texas-based collective demonstrates its unique ability to bring pop, progressive and heavy rock together into one seamless blend that can only be called King's X. --Jedd Beaudoin

Album Description
The legendary trio King's X are widely known as the pioneers of powerful groove rock. Highly respected by critics, adored by their fans and held in high esteem for their excellent instrumental skills by musicians from all areas of music - King's X has a brilliant reputation that is unequalled in this business. The new album Ogre Tones is their first studio album with new material in four years and it is already being touted one of the best in their catalogue. To properly welcome King's X to the IOMA / SPV / RYKO family, Inside Out Music will be implementing its most aggressive marketing/release plan to date. This will feature two promotional video clips that have already been filmed by famed Hip-Hip director, "Dr Teeth", a national commercial radio campaign, a stand-alone consumer advertising campaign and a 6-week North American tour that has been coordinated to begin with the release of the new CD. Ogre Tones was produced and mixed by Michael Wagener (Metallica, Alice Cooper, Queen, Ozzy Osbourne, Dokken, Megadeth, Motley Crue, Skid Row, Extreme).

3 out of 5 stars Will never be the Same   September 10, 2008
Ever since Gretchen goes to Nebraska, and Dogman Unfortunately I don't think Kings X will ever be the same. I dont know why. I have no idea why Doug opted to make a cd with Reb Beach(The Mob). Ive heard XV and seems mediocre at best. I wish they could get there old magic back but I dont see it happening.

5 out of 5 stars another monster from the best band in the world   September 8, 2008
In my book this is the best band in the world today and their combined writing skills are 2nd only to LENNON/MCCARTNEY in the annals of popular music.
Also musicaly from another planet than THE BEATLES, their creativity is endless and full of unexpected surprises. This is another example of their amazing creations. I think it's futile to compare individual CD's from these masters as they differ sooo much and have changed from period to period as well as from record company to record company. Suffice to say that anyone that loves popular music in any form should have at least half a dozen or so of their cd's. It would be impossible to discuss modern music without a deep knowledge of the KINGS'X catalogue.
It is one of the most mysterious and shamefull facets of music that these guys are not hailed as the greatest band in the world today. While massively popular bands ( U2 / BON JOVI etc. ) are retreading their old material and have long run out of ideas , these far more deserving musos labour in comparative unnonimity. BUY THEIR CD"S PEOPLE !!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Energy with no creativity   October 10, 2007

This is far and away King's X's worst album. There is a ton of energy on it, but the band used absolutely no brains on any of these songs... if this was my first time hearing these guys, I'd think they had the IQ of your typical thrash band. And what in the world were they doing rehashing several songs whose original versions were FANTASTIC?! How can any King's X fan who heard the original "Freedom" not find this album to be an insult? What makes King's X albums so great is their ability to combine smarts with rock, but this album sounds more like a beginners' rock exercise. Nothing special going on here whatsoever.

5 out of 5 stars Melodic, soulful vocal harmonies, funky bass, tasty guitar, and a driving drum beat. Yup, that's KING'S X!!   November 24, 2006

King's X's "Ogre Tones" is another masterpiece by this dynamic power trio. The CD is filled with their trademark lush vocal harmonies, Doug's low and funky bass guitar rumble, Ty's melodic and heavy guitar, and Jerry's diverse and driving drum beats.
My personal favorites are: "Stay" (nice vocal harmonies, melodic guitar with a very tasty Ty solo, and a heavy groove), "Hurricane" (nice vocal harmonies, with a pounding bass and tom drum beat), "If" (a soulful, moving "power" ballad, with the vocal harmonies and melodic, arpeggiated guitar), "Bebop" (funky bass, odd timing, and soulful vocals), "Honesty" (nice acoustic ballad sung by Ty), "Open My Eyes" (heavy, melodic tune with some cool riffs), "Mudd" (lush vocal harmonies, heavy/saturated guitar, and Doug's heartfelt lyrics about his uncle who passed away), and "Goldilox (Reprise)" (nice remake of a song on their first CD, and a fan favorite at their concerts).
This legendary band has been around for a long time. To me, they're like a combination of Hendrix, Cream/Clapton, The Beatles, etc., all rolled into one modern, unique power trio, with a sound that's all their own. I've been listening to them since about 1990, after their second CD came out, "Gretchen Goes To Nebraska". Through the years, they've "wowed" me with their epic sounding CDs. "Ogre Tones" is no different. The CD has been out for awhile, but I still listen to it constantly.
And, seeing the band live is a real treat. Their powerful sound sucks you in from the first rumble of Doug's bass.
If you appreciate a power trio with melodic, soulful vocal harmonies, funky bass, melodic and heavy guitar, a powerful, driving drum beat, and incredible individual skills and character, I think you'll enjoy "Ogre Tones" by King's X.
